Wind power is generated from kinetic energy of wind. Wind is caused by uneven heating of Earth's surface creating air currents. Wind turbines convert kinetic energy of wind into mechanical then electrical energy using generators. India has over 19,000 MW of installed wind power capacity, mainly in Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. Wind power accounts for 8.5% of India's total installed capacity and generates 1.6% of the country's electricity. The government is working to increase wind power generation across many states in India.
