Absolute zero is the lowest theoretically possible temperature, at which point molecular motion would cease. It is defined as 0 Kelvin and is used as the baseline for temperature scales. The closest experiments have come to achieving absolute zero is 450 picoKelvins in a Bose-Einstein condensate. Absolute zero was an idea developed by British physicist Lord Kelvin, who proposed that at this temperature no heat energy would remain in a substance.
