Disha DuggalPRESSURE IN SOLIDS
MOLECULAR COMPOSITION OF SOLIDS, LIQUIDS, GASES..SOLIDS
LIQUIDS
GASES in gases, the particles are very spread out. They are moving very quickly in different directions. If they are let out of their container, they immediately diffuse in all directions. They are not arranged in any pattern. They are changing places all of the time. The video below is simulation of how gas molecules act:
Q: What is brownian motion?Any minute particle suspended in a liquid (or gas) moves chaotically under the action of collisions with surrounding molecules. The intensity of this chaotic motion is increased with an increase in temperature. This experimental fact was discovered by a British scientist R.Brown in 1827.Here is a simulation of what brownian motion isThought to look like.
Q. What is THRUST?The total force acting 90°on a surface is called thrust. It is only the thrust which is responsible for exerting pressure on a surface.(Thrust)90 degrees angle
Q. What is pressure? The force per unit area is called pressure, But mathematically, the expression of pressure can be written as:Pressure= Force or thrust Area PLEASE NOTE:The word pressure can only be used for a force acting normally at a surface. A force acting at Any Other Point will NOT exert any pressure.Pressure is a Scalar Quantity,And its units areN/m² or Pascal (P)
FACTORS AFFECTING PRESSURESmaller the area, larger the pressure.
More the force, More the pressure.
More the Area, Less the Pressure.
5 quick APPLICATIONS OF PRESSUREAir pressure in a car tire supports the weight of the car Sucking a drink through a straw - fluid flows because of pressure differences. Aircrafts fly because of the air pressure on the wings. Bullet fired from a gun is driven by gas pressure. Toy balloon inflates because of air pressure inside.
Solving pressure problemsEg: A force of 10N acts over an Area of 2 m square. What pressure is created by the force?P=F/ATherefore, P=10/2Which is equal to 5 Pascal.
TRY SOLVING THIS ONEA force of 500 N acts over an Area of 10 m square. What Pressure is created? <click to show solution>P= F/ATherefore P= 500/10So the answer is P= 5O Pa.
The last one.. But it’s a little tougher!A force of 300 N creates a pressure of 5 n/m square. Over what are is the force acting? <click to show solution>P=F/AIn this case, we need to find the A.So we change the formula so that it becomes A=F/P, basically exchanging A & P’s places. Therefore A= 300/5So the Answer is 60 Pascal or N/m square.
