FeatureReal-time backups for WooCommerce

Real-time WooCommerce backups that keep every order

A daily backup misses every order placed since it ran. If you restore from it, those orders are gone. BlogVault backs up each WooCommerce order the moment it’s placed, so you can restore your store after a bad update and keep every sale.

How BlogVault restores a store without losing orders

In this example, a plugin update breaks a store’s checkout at 14:10. The top line shows orders being backed up as they arrive; the bottom line shows the site. When the owner restores, only the site goes back. The orders stay.

  1. 14:10 · The update

    An automatic update breaks checkout

A payments plugin updates itself and the checkout page stops working. The last daily backup was taken at 02:00.

  2. 14:22 · The restore

The site is restored to 14:05

Files, plugins and settings go back to 14:05, just before the update. Checkout works again a minute later.

  3. 184 · The orders

All 184 orders since 02:00 are kept

Each order was backed up as it was placed, so the restore doesn’t remove them. New orders keep arriving as normal.

Why a daily backup isn’t enough for a store

When you restore an ordinary backup, the whole database goes back to the time of that backup, including your orders. Every order placed since then is lost.

12 h 10 min of sales184 ordersNot in the backup
  • Customers paid, but orders are gone

Your payment provider still took the money, but WooCommerce no longer has the orders that tell you what to ship.

  • Stock and accounts go back too

Stock levels, new customer accounts and used coupons all go back to how they were at 02:00.

  • Orders must be re-entered by hand

The usual fix is rebuilding each order by hand from payment emails, while new orders keep coming in.

How real-time backups work

How BlogVault backs up orders in real time

The BlogVault plugin watches for important store events, such as a new order, and records just that change. Our servers collect new events at regular intervals and store them securely in the EU, away from your web host.

Start with WooCommerce

Real-time backups vs host and plugin backups

Host backups and most backup plugins run once or twice a day. That’s fine for a blog, but a store’s database changes with every sale.

How three kinds of backup handle a WooCommerce store
Host snapshotNightly plugin backupBlogVault real-time
▸ How oftenUsually once a day, on the host’s scheduleEvery 12 or 24 hours, as you schedule itEach order as it is placed, plus hourly full backups
▸ Orders since the last copyLost if you restoreLost if you restoreKept: they are already off-site
▸ Roll back the site, keep the ordersUsually the whole account or serverUsually the whole databaseYes: the site goes back, the orders stay
▸ Where the copy livesWith your hostOften on the same server, or storage you set upOff your host: 9 encrypted copies, 2 providers, EU
▸ Work on your serverNone on the site; it runs at the server levelThe archive is built on your serverOnly the change behind each event

Hosts and plugins differ, so check how yours handles orders.

What to check in any WooCommerce backup

Four questions to ask about a store backup before you need it: how much it slows the store, how far back it goes, what it covers and how it restores.

  • [Load]

It won’t slow your store down

Only the change behind each order is recorded on your store. Collecting and storing it happens on our servers, so nothing heavy runs while customers check out.

Staging for store updates

Test store updates on a staging site first

A staging site is a private copy of your store where you can try an update before it reaches your customers. BlogVault’s staging sites are password-protected and can’t send emails, so a test order never reaches a real customer. When the update works, push it to your live store.

On the WooCommerce plan a staging site lasts 6 months.

Store backup questions

Is it really real time?
Almost. Each order is recorded on your store the moment it’s placed, and our servers collect new events at short, regular intervals. Collecting in batches keeps the load on your store low, but it means there’s a short delay before each order is copied off your server.
Will it slow my store down?
No, not noticeably. Only the change related to each order is recorded, and the collecting and storing happen on our servers. No backup files are built on your server.
If I restore, do I lose the orders placed since the backup?
No, if you choose to keep them. The restore takes the rest of the site back and keeps the orders. You can test the restore on our servers first.
What exactly is captured in real time?
Every order, and other important store events. Files, plugins, themes, media and the rest of the database are covered by the plan’s full backups, hourly by default. If a plugin keeps business data in its own tables, ask support how it is covered before you rely on it.
How far back can I restore?
Up to 365 days on the WooCommerce plan, from any backup in that window.
Which plan has real-time backups?
Only the WooCommerce plan. Personal backs up every 24 hours and Business every 12, which suits sites that don’t take orders all day.
Where are the backups kept?
Away from your host, encrypted, on GDPR-compliant servers in the EU: 9 copies with 2 storage providers. If your host goes down or is hacked, your backups aren’t affected.
