Introduction
īĩ A disabled person is enabled to move around independently using a mobile
touch screen and a voice recognition which is interfaced with motors
through microcontroller.
īĩ When the direction is to be changed, the mobile touch screen sends a data
through Bluetooth to direct the user to required destination .
īĩ This can also be controlled through simple voice commands using voice
controller.
īĩ Implementation of GSM technology in Medical applications .
Objective
īĩ Providing independent, productive and enjoyable living for physically
challenged people by the use of voice and touch screen operated
wheelchair.
īĩ The goal of this smart wheelchair project is to enhance an ordinary
powered wheelchair using sensors to perceive the wheelchair's
surroundings, a speech interface to interpret commands.
īĩ Intelligent wheelchair will play an important role in the future welfare
society. The use of intelligent wheelchair encourages the view of the
machine as a partner rather than as a tool
īĩ Implementation of infrared sensor which is used to sense the obstacles
coming in path of robot.

Voice Operated Wheelchair
Existing system

īĩ When the voice is detected, the wheelchair can be controlled to move
in that direction by giving commands to the wheelchair.
īĩ The electrical signals are transferred to these motors using some
hardware ports, called the communication ports.
Voice Operated Wheelchair
ī‚—Few patients such as quadriplegics’ and multiple sclerosis
type cannot drive joystick operated powered wheelchair
ī‚— they are dependent on other people or helpers to move from
one place to another and in such a way they don’t have the
freedom of mobility.
ī‚—This powered wheelchair motor control and drive
system which consists of microcontroller and DC motors
ī‚—The voice recognition system is used to detect and
recognizes the patient’s voice and its output in the
digital form will be sent to microcontroller

ī‚—The Arduino Uno is a microcontroller board based on the
ATmega328. It has 14 digital input/output pins 6 analog
inputs, a 16 MHz crystal oscillator, a USB connection, a
power jack, an ICSP header, and a reset button.
ī‚—The SIM900 is a complete Quad-band GSM/GPRS solution
in an SMT module which can be embedded in the
customer applications. Featuring an industry-standard
interface, the SIM900 delivers GSM/GPRS
850/900/1800/1900MHz performance for voice, SMS, Data,
and Fax in a small form factor and with low power
consumption.
ī‚—A DC motor is any of a class of electrical machines that
converts direct current electrical power into mechanical
power.
ī‚—A simple DC motor has a stationary set of magnets in
the stator and an armature with one more windings of
insulated wire wrapped around a soft iron core that
concentrates the magnetic field.
ī‚—A light-emitting diode (LED) is a two-lead semiconductor
light source. It is a pn-junction diode, which emits light
when activated.
ī‚—Heart beat sensor measures the Heart beat of a person.
Heart rate can vary as the body's need to absorb oxygen
and excrete carbon dioxide changes during exercise or
sleep.
ī‚—The HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor uses sonar to determine
distance to an object like bats do. It offers excellent non-
contact range detection with high accuracy and stable
readings in an easy-to-use package. From 2cm to 400 cm
ī‚— A buzzer or beeper is an audio signaling device, which
may be mechanical, electromechanical, or piezoelectric.
ī‚—The L293D motor driver is available for providing User
with ease and user friendly interfacing for embedded
application.
ī‚—The Temperature sensors are precision integrated-circuit
temperature devices with an output voltage linearly-
proportional to the Centigrade temperature.
Embedded C
ī‚—Embedded C is a set of language extensions for the C
Programming language by the C Standards committee to
address commonality issues that exist between C
extensions for different embedded systems.
ī‚—Embedded C includes number of features not
available in normal C, such as, fixed-point arithmetic,
named address spaces, and basic I/O hardware
addressing.
ī‚—Embedded C uses most of the syntax and semantics
of standard C, e.g., main () function, variable
definition, data-type declaration, conditional
statements (if, switch, case), loops (while, for),
functions, arrays and strings, structures and union, bit
operations, macros, etc.
Advantages of Embedded C
ī‚—It is small and simpler to learn, understand, program
and debug.
ī‚—It is fairly efficient
ī‚—C compilers are available for almost all embedded
devices in use today.
ī‚—Compared to assembly language, C code written is
more reliable and scalable, more portable between
different platforms.
ī‚—It supports access to I/O and provides ease of
management of large embedded projects.
Advantages
ī‚—Input can be changed rapidly
ī‚—Automated operation
ī‚—More reliable
ī‚—User friendly
ī‚—Reduce man power
ī‚—Less wiring because of Bluetooth
ī‚—Very easy to use
Disadvantages
ī‚—It has an operating range of 10 meters.
ī‚—RFID technology is often expensive.
ī‚—Even the best speech recognition system
sometimes make errors.
Applications
ī‚—Hospitals
ī‚—Home
ī‚—The wheel chair can also be operated by blind people
ī‚—Can be operated by the handicapped person itself
ī‚—Ability to provide sufficient risk management
ī‚—Obstacles in the way of wheelchair are detected and avoided
using IR sensors
Conclusion
ī‚— The motor drive and control system of the prototype intelligent
wheelchair has been presented.
ī‚—The proposed voice & touchscreen operated intelligent
wheelchair would bring more convenience for the disabled
people.
ī‚—The technology can also enhance safety for users who use
ordinary joystick-controlled powered wheelchairs, by preventing
collisions with walls, fixed objects, furniture and other people.
Future Scope
ī‚—To make the present touch screen feasible to all
classes of disabled, particularly for the blind, the
touchscreen can be made Braille so that the blind
person can feel the touch pad and operate the
wheelchair accordingly.
ī‚—The touchscreen in the present prototype has keys as
the input mode. Also, the wheelchair can be
controlled by the user himself through voice
recognition.
ī‚—The range of sensing can be further increased by
using high accuracy ultrasonic sensors.
ī‚—To save energy, the energy from the motion of the
