A Seminar on : Remote Sensing in Coastal Management
Introduction of remote sensing in
coastal management.
• Remote sensing techniques have been utilised with
various types of sensors and for various applications in
environmental purposes since the early 1960s. Weather
monitoring and forecasting was one of the first
applications of satellite remote sensing, but it was soon
apparent that satellites could also be used for detailed
mapping of the land surface and for the monitoring of
the oceans. The main advantage of satellite remote
sensing of the oceans is the fact that it provides large-
scale and monitoring of entire basins. At the same time,
it can also be used in smaller scales and coastal areas .
Remote sensing(RS) - Basic
• Remote sensing is the obtaining information about an
object without making physical contact with the
object under study.
• In current usage, the term "remote sensing" generally
refers to the use of satellite- or aircraft-based sensor
technologies to detect the objects on Earth.
• Generally remote sensing means sensing of the Earth
surface from space by making use of the properties of
electromagnetic wave emitted, reflected or diffracted
by the sensed object.
Remote sensing - Process
• RS Process :
• Energy Source(A)
• Energy Interaction with the
atmosphere(B)
• Interaction (C)
• Recording of Energy by Sensor (D)
• Data Transmission and Processing
(E)
• Image Processing and
Analysis : (F)
• Image Restoration / Correction
• Image Enhancement
• Image Transformation
• Image Classification
• Application –(G)
Application of RS in coastal management(CM)
• Watershed and Resources mapping
• Identification of erosion –prone areas
• Mapping and measurement of pollutants in broad sense.
• Monitoring coastal zone for environmental impact assessment
• Location of offshore fishing grounds.
• Data on coastal geomorphology and habitats.
• Erosion-prone areas –
• satellite image--
Features of Remote Sensing (RS)
• Remote sensing provides a regional view.
• Remote sensing provides repetitive looks at the same
area.
• Remote sensors “see” over a broader portion of the
spectrum than the human eye.
• Sensors can focus in an specific bandwidth in an image.
• Some remote sensors operate in all season, at night,
and in bad weather.
• Remote sensors often record signals electronically and
provide gio-referenced digital data.
Advantages of Remote Sensing
• Advantages: Synoptic view, Temporal
• Multi-disciplinary application – Land, ocean,
atmosphere
• Spatial Resolution: measure of the smallest angular
between two object.
• Spectral Resolution: number and dimension of specific
wavelength to which a sensor is sensitive.
• Temporal Resolution : how often a sensor record
image of particular area.
• Radiometric Resolution : detect diff. Signals.
Some imp. Satellite sensors :
CONCLUSIONS..
• The ocean ecosystems are threatened by many of
causes. Management of these threats is critical to
both present and future generations. Innovation in
sensor technology and platforms should be
encouraged to expand the capabilities of the system
or provide information on environmental processes
of the coastal area and the open oceans. Additional
effort is needed from the oceanographic scientific
community of all Mediterranean countries to
increase the use of remote sensing systems.
