National Programme for Control of Blindness (NPCB) was launched in 1976 with the goal of reducing blindness prevalence from 1.4% to 0.3%. Main causes of blindness are cataract, refractive error, corneal blindness, glaucoma, and others. NPCB aims to reduce backlog of blindness, develop eye care facilities in every district, and improve human resources and service delivery. It functions at central, state, and district levels. Strategies include strengthening service delivery, developing human resources, promoting awareness, and building institutional capacity. The Vision 2020 initiative also aims to eliminate avoidable blindness by 2020 through a four-tiered structure of centers of excellence, training centers, service centers, and vision centers.
