Definition:-
•Interruption is the most usual
modification of direct current,the flow
of current commencing and ceasing at
regular intervals.the rise and fall of
intensity may be sudden or gradual.
Indications :-
•Electrical stimulation of muscle is accomplished with either
direct or alternating current, or a combination of the two
•Muscles are stimulated for one of four reasons:
(1) to aid in muscle pumping for edema reduction and tissue
healing
(2) to re-educate muscle
(3) to retard atrophy in immobilized or partially denervated
muscle
(4) to enhance strength
Electrical stimulation for edema reduction
and tissue healing
•Electrically induced muscle contraction, such as that
obtained with direct current or HVPGS, can be used
to duplicate regular muscle contractions.
•These contractions help stimulate circulation by
pumping blood through venous and lymphatic
channels after acute injuries, when fluid
accumulation is significant.
•Intermittent muscle contraction, which permits
increased blood flow, may also produce relaxation of
the muscles
Electrical stimulation for muscle re-education
•Electrical muscle stimulation can be used for
muscular re-education after sports injuries
•Central nervous system inhibition is often
the cause, as muscle contraction causes
pain.
Muscle stimulation for retardation of atrophy
•Electrical muscle stimulation may help prevent
strength losses as well as prevent muscular atrophy
which occurs when a limb is immobilized.
•While electrical stimulation retards denervation
atrophy, its effect depends on the pulse duration, the
frequency and intensity of current, the placement of
the stimulating electrode, the duration and number
of treatment sessions, the rest periods between the
treatment sessions, and the resting length of the
muscle during the stimulation.
Muscle stimulation for strength gains
•Electrical stimulation is achieved by stimulating
the motor nerve to a muscle by means of
electrodes placed on the skin. Electrical
stimulation can either increase the maximum
contractile force in the muscle or it can recruit
more fibers to contract with a given stimulus,
thereby enhancing the strength of contraction
