3 What have you learned from
your audience feedback?
Initial Brief
• At the beginning of our project each
member of our group provided a potential
storyline that we could use. In total we
had 6 storylines to chose from and we
eventually agreed on ‘Lily’. We knew that
this initial storyline would not be the final
draft and throughout the project we have
made alterations to the storyline so that it
makes more sense or suits the audience
better. After selecting the idea we wanted
to obtain audience feedback and did this
by posting a questionnaire on ‘Google
forms’. The questionnaire consisted of a
synopsis of the film idea and a number of
questions asking the audiences opinions
and improvements. In total we received
10 responses which we used to alter our
film so that it would meet their
expectations. Our questionnaire can be
seen to the left
Who was your initial audience and how
did we aim the film at them?
• After selecting a fitting genre for our
storyline we decided to conduct some
research into which group of people
would provide the largest target
audience. We used the information
gained from our questionnaire and
presented it in 2 pie charts. From the 2
pie charts we were able to deduce that
it would be most affective to target our
film at an audience aged 18 to 35. We
calculated the average age of a viewer
of a psychological thriller to be 27. As
for the gender of the viewer we found
the audience to be slightly male-
dominant. Personally I do not feel that
this would effect the target audience as
the film involves feature and themes
that appeal to both genders.
Did you understand the story?
• Out of the 10 responses we received 9 said that they
fully understood the storyline of our film. The final
respondent did say they did not understand the
storyline but did go on to say that they did not
understand why lily attacked Brett. To make sure
this would not be a problem in our final product we
made sure we filming to make it clear that Lily was
acting strangely due to the delusions and paranoia
she had developed
Which age group(s) did they think the
film was aimed at?
• We also used our questionnaire to ask our potential
audience which age group they believed the film was
aimed at. We were happy to see that all of the
respondents gave an age within the range we had in
mind (young adult). This means that we felt it not
necessary to alter the film in accordance to the age of the
viewer as we seemed to have already tailored the film to
a that particular audience
What gender did they think the film
was?
• Of the 10 responses we received 8 correctly
identified our film as a psychological thriller. The
remaining 2 identified it as a horror which is
understandable as despite our film being a
psychological thriller it incorporates some of the
common themes of the horror genre e.g. death and
murder. In general there is overlap between the two
genres in our film meaning that we concluded no
changes needed to be made as many psychological
thrillers have this same overlap.
What suggestions did they have for the
sounds and music?
• We looked through the responses and make amends to
improve our final product. A few of the responses suggested
the addition of eerie music when Lily was showing irrational
behaviour or whilst in the visions. This suggestion was taken
onboard and in the final film this music is heard. Three of the
responses suggested having faint voices in the background as
Lily is having her visions. Like the last suggestion this
improvement can be heard in the final product. Another
improvement that was suggested was to have some dramatic
music whilst Lily is attacking Brett and he tries to convince
her against it. We implemented this improvement by using a
dramatic build-up that is heard from Lily picking up the knife
to the knife hitting the floor after she drops it. The remaining
responses can be seen of the following slide along with some
of the sound clips used in our film.

What improvements did they suggest?
• Out of the ten responses that we received three of them were related
to the motive Lily had for trying to kill Brett. Two of them said that
there needed to be a better reason and the third suggested that a
good addition would have been that Brett had been cheating on Lily.
As our product is only 5 minutes we felt that this was not enough
time to incorporate this idea and personally I feel that this would
make Lily’s actions less delusional and irrational. Three people
suggested that the doctor should have died under different
circumstances like slipping on a wet floor. We felt that this would
not have been a good idea as we wanted the doctors death to be as
impactful as possible. Changing the circumstances of the doctors
death to slipping on a wet floor would not be impactful in the way
we wanted it as this is often linked to comedy. Another
improvement that was suggested was to have Lily murder the
doctor. We did not act upon this suggestion as we felt it would be
unexplainable as Lily had no real motive to murder him, unlike her
attempt to kill Brett where she had the motive. The remaining
suggestions can be seen on the following slide

How did we ensure meaning would be
apparent to the audience during filming
and editing?
• As we have included visions through out the film its narrative is
non-linear. This means that the viewers may easily become
confused if precautions aren't taken to ensure meaning. To
make sure that it was clear which parts of the film we the visions
and which were reality we decided to add a monochrome effect
to the visions. This meant that the visions looked out of place
compared to the rest of the film and the audience can clearly
and easily differentiate between vision and reality. Another
effect we added to ensure meaning was a ‘dip to white’. This is a
type of transition used at the beginning and end of each vision.
These were coupled with two different sound effects (one at the
start and one at the end of each vision) allowed the viewers to
easily be able to comprehend when a vision occurs. Final each
vision included little to no sound. The was intentional to create
not only an eerie feel but to also make the visions seem
unnatural. As the visions contain no diagetic sound but plenty of
action they seem unusual and hence are easily differentiated
from reality
Refined Rough Cut
• Before exporting our final film we
wanted to get some more audience
feedback. We did this by showing our
potential audience our refined rough
cut. This was an unfinished version of
our film that varies very little from our
final product. Getting more feedback at
this point meant we would be able to
add the finishing touches to our film so
that it was of the highest quality. Like
before we used Google forms to create
another questionnaire. It consisted of
the rough cut followed by a series of
questions. We then distributed it over
social media which lead to responses.
After closing the questionnaire we set
about analysing the responses we had
received.
‘On a scale of 0 – 10, what rating
would you give the film?
• When looking at the responses we
were pleased to see that our film
had been rated so positively. Two
respondents gave our film 8/10
and 5 respondents gave the film
9/10 followed by 3 perfect scores
10/10. these results give our film
an average score f 9/10 as seen on
the bar chart on the right. On the
whole the respondents were very
impressed our film and believed it
was of high quality. This means
that the film is successful in
providing the feel we wanted.
‘Did you understand the films
storyline?’
• After analysing the results we were happy to see that all 10
respondents fully understood the films storyline. This is clear evidence
that we have been able to clearly communicate our storyline through
our film as on our first storyline only 90% of respondents understood
the film, whereas now 100% understood the storyline. This shows that
the effort we put into the film made the difference between Lily’s
visions and reality clear. This evidence shows that we have been able
to incorporate complex ideas without this confusing the viewer or
reducing from the viewers enjoyment.
‘On a scale of 0 – 10, how well do you
think the music/sound in the film
work?’ • Just as with the ratings for the film,
the ratings for the sound and music
were high proving that the choices
we made in regard to sound and
music were successful. A majority
of the sounds and music heard in
our film were the result of
suggestions made by respondents
of our first questionnaire. Our
average rating for our film
soundtrack was 9.1/10 showing that
the soundtrack is of high quality
that also satisfies the audience’s
expectations.
‘What genre do you think this film is?’
• 90% of the respondents identified the film as a psychological
thriller. This is an overall improvement of 10% from our last
questionnaire. This improvement implies we have successfully
incorporated the common themes and ideas that are found in
this genre into our film and have done this in a satisfying and
effective way. Just like our first questionnaire there were
some responses that identified the film as a horror. But here
only one respondent thought this making us believe that we
were successful in cementing the film into its true genre. The
one horror response could be explained by the common over
lap between horror and psychological thriller. Even with this
response we believe that we have successfully satisfied the
conditions of the psychological thriller genre.
‘What age group do you think this film
is aimed at?’
• As seen in our first
questionnaire almost every
respondent was able to identify
an age group close the target
audience of our film. This
shows that we were successful
in appealing to the target
audience we had in mind with
little to no confusion. Therefore
it would be sensible to assume
that few changes would need to
be made in regards to the target
audience
‘On a scale of 0 – 10, how much did
you enjoy the film?’
• The average/ score in this
section was 8.9/10. Three people
gave 8/10, five people gave 9/10
and two people gave 10/10.
These results show a very
positive reception of our film
and that the film successfully
satisfied the audiences
expectations. This resulted in
very few alteration being
required.
‘Can you suggest any
improvements?’
• After analysing the responses we found that 4 of the respondents had no
suggested improvements which is an improvement compared to the 1 in our
first questionnaire. The fact that 40% of respondents could not think of a
single improvement that could be made shows that we are successful in
creating a high quality entertaining product. But the main purpose of these
questionnaires was to collect improvements which 6 of the respondents did.
Two of the respondents said that the scene in which Lily attacks Brett is too
quick and lacks dialogue between the two. To respond to this we decided to
look back at this scene. After relooking at the scene we decided to insert an
unused shot (seen above we had previously discarded. We also added the
sound track from another unused shot in which Lily says “I’m not crazy”.
This dialogue and extra shot were combined and then inserted into the
scene. Another suggestion said that the heartbeat heard in the opening
sequence was too loud and that it was clipping. After watching this clip
again we realised that it was indeed clipping and we easily corrected this by
reducing the volume of the heartbeat only. A third suggestion said that the
sound effect in the post credits seems to cut out quickly rather than fade
out. We easily fixed this by adding multiple versions of the same sound clip,
each being quieter than the last. Other suggestions can be seen of the
following slide
