Introduction
Electricity is an important
resource that demands respect.
More than 800 people are electrocuted each year.
Thousands more suffer disabling injuries from
accidental contact with electricity. More than half
of these accidents involve the same common low
voltage you use in your home.
Electricity is the number one cause
of fires in the work place.
Electrical Hazards
 The most common types of electrical hazards that
cause injuries fall into three categories.
 Fires
 Shocks
 Burns
Electrical Hazard - Fire
 As the conductor heats,
any object with a flash
point lower than the
heat being generated
will cause a fire.
Electricity is the #1
cause of fires in industry.
Electrical Hazard - Shock
Electric shock occurs
upon contact of a
(human) body with any
source of electricity that
causes a sufficient
current through the skin,
muscles, or hair.
Electrical Hazard - Burns
Electrical burns are
caused by having enough
current pass through
body tissue to literally
cook the tissue
Electrical burns are also
caused by arc blasts
Cause of Electrical Hazards
 Many electrical shocks
occur when safe work
practices are not followed.
Failure to lockout electrical
systems properly for
system maintenance and
repair
 Failure to ground
equipment
 Use of defective equipment
and lines
 Use of wet electrical
equipment
Rules for Electric Safety
 Never overload a circuit
 Stay away from all unguarded conductors
 To unplug, pull on the plug, not the cord
 Use appropriate PPE Safe Work Practices
 Use insulating protective equipment
 Inspect cords before each use
 Don’t use metal objects around electrical
equipment
