Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy in 1451 and had a passion for the sea from a young age. He moved to Portugal in the 1470s where he married and had a son before embarking on various maritime expeditions. Unable to secure support from Portugal, Columbus traveled to Spain where Queen Isabella of Castile backed an expedition to sail west to reach Asia.
