This chapter discusses the evolution from hardware-defined radios (HDR) to software-defined radios (SDR) and hybrid architectures. SDR offers greater flexibility and cost-effective upgrades but faces challenges in matching the efficiencies of traditional hardware solutions. The chapter highlights the potential of SDR in wideband and multiband applications while comparing its capabilities with HDR.
