Albert Einstein was born in Ulm, Germany in 1879 to Jewish parents. He showed early brilliance in physics and mathematics but failed to be admitted to the Zurich Polytechnic initially. However, in 1901 he received his diploma and in 1905 earned his doctorate. That same year, known as his "miracle year", he wrote four groundbreaking papers that changed physics, including his paper on the photoelectric effect which won him the Nobel Prize and his theory of special relativity which introduced the world to E=mc2. Einstein later helped develop the atomic bomb and was offered the presidency of Israel, which he declined. He died in 1955 in Princeton, New Jersey.
