The lymphatic system is part of the circulatory system and carries a clear fluid called lymph towards the heart. Lymph nodes and lymphatic organs play an important role in the immune system. The lymphatic system processes excess fluid that exits blood vessels and enters the lymphatic vessels. It eventually empties into lymphatic ducts that drain into subclavian veins near the shoulders. The lymphatic system helps return excess fluid from tissues back into the bloodstream.
