Joe Henson shared thisIn a market where Q1 restaurant traffic is already down -1.8%, rising fuel costs are a massive variable. But the impact is far from even - there are clear segments that are benefiting and those that are more heavily impacted. Our Black Box Intelligence™ team analyzed the data, and the insights are clear: As gas prices peak, delivery sales drop across the board—with one major exception: QSR Delivery. Our latest data from the Restaurant Performance Network identifies $3.50 per gallon as the historical tipping point. Once we cross that line, we don't just see a traffic drop; we see a massive "trade-down" effect. The Reality: Casual & Family Dining are facing the steepest headwinds as discretionary income tightens. * QSR & Fast Casual: Directly capturing that displaced volume. * Fine Dining: Remaining largely insulated. Whether you are playing offense in Limited-Service or defense in Full-Service, you cannot manage what you don’t measure. Don’t fly blind in a volatile economy. Reach out to Black Box Intelligence™ today to see how our 400+ brand benchmarks can give you the context you need to win the trade-down. You can also DM me to see how our AI Restaurant Performance Platform can help you bridge the gap between "market trends" and "your results." Joe Henson shared thisWhen top-tier outlets like the Financial Times and The Wall Street Journal need to understand the health of the restaurant industry, they look to Black Box Intelligence™ Recent headlines point to a softening in sales and traffic across the U.S. But the real question for any leadership team is not "What is the restaurant industry doing?"; it’s "Is it the market, or is it me?"; how do you compare to your competitors, where do you fall in your segment, are you winning big or barely winning... In this environment, "good enough" data doesn't cut it. To drive successful strategic decisions, you need the full context; both inside and outside your organization. At Black Box Intelligence, we provide the largest, most reliable source of financial, workforce, and guest data in the industry. We don't just show you the trends; we show you where you stand within them. You need the full context of the BBI Restaurant Performance Network to avoid operating with blind spots. We help 400+ brands and 120k+ locations move past the "why" and get straight to the "what’s next." Are you leading with confidence or guessing? Let's get you the data you need to win. Joe Henson shared this🛡️2026 People Outlook: Stability is the New Growth Strategy 🛡️ Black Box Intelligence™ recently hosted an exclusive, client-only roundtable with HR and People leaders from top Restaurant industry brands. While the specific discussion remains confidential, the emerging themes are critical for every operator navigating the current labor market. 1. The General Manager "Anchor" ⚓ Stability starts at the top. The roundtable highlighted something we see in the data everyday: The tenure of the General Manager is the single strongest predictor of hourly crew retention. One leader noted that a unit "wobbles" for months until a leader stabilizes, often taking 2.5+ years in a specific unit to reach peak retention and performance efficiency. 2. The "Human Firewall" vs. Modern Scams 🕵️♂️ The threat landscape has shifted from cash scams to social engineering. Leaders reported a rise in sophisticated "Fake CEO" text campaigns and AI-doctored food photos used to claim refunds. The consensus? The threat is real, but the defense is working. Panelists noted that successful scams are occurring less frequently than in the past, but as tactics evolve, training must be continuous to maintain that success. 3. The "Build vs. Buy" Reality 🏗️ The data on management hiring is stark. Participants shared that external management hires often have significantly higher failure rates (up to 60% in the first 90 days) compared to internal promotions. The winning strategy for 2026 isn't just recruiting—it’s rigorous internal development and certification paths to stop the churn cycle before it starts. 4. Data Tells You What, Peers Tell You How 🤝 While software, data and benchmarks provide the visibility to know where you stand, the "how" comes from community. The true value of the network isn't just the data—it's the closed-door collaboration where competitors become problem-solvers, sharing tactical playbooks on everything from compliance to culture. The Bottom Line: The theme for 2026 is Retention as a Defense Strategy. Success will come from protecting your people—both from external threats (scams) and internal instability (turnover)—by building strong, tenured leadership pipelines from within. If you’re a client of Black Box Intelligence products, send me a message to get added to the invite list. These sessions are free and open to all BBI customers—a great way to share insights and learn together! 🙌 You can also sign up to be included in the Best Practices Club here: https://lnkd.in/g2dNY_Zt Look at my previous post to read about the BBI Best Practices Club discussion with Restaurant Finance leaders that was focused on the 2026 Outlook: The Era of Aggressive Pricing is Over #RestaurantIndustry #RestaurantHR #WorkforceRetention #HospitalityLeadership #BlackBoxIntelligence

Joe Henson posted this🚀 2026 Outlook: The Era of Aggressive Pricing is Over Black Box Intelligence™ recently hosted an exclusive roundtable with finance leaders from top industry brands to discuss their strategies for 2026. While the data remains confidential, the emerging themes are critical for everyone in the industry. 1. The Pricing Power Pivot 📉 The days of relying on price increases to manage margins are behind us. The consensus for 2026 is moderation—targeting increases at or slightly below inflation (2-3%). Some brands are even budgeting for a decrease in average ticket to drive transaction volume, banking on efficiency to protect the bottom line. 2. The Third-Party Delivery "Tug-of-War" 🛵 Delivery is here to stay, but the economics are under scrutiny. Operators are balancing higher menu prices to cover commissions against the risk of conversion drop-off. It’s a game of pennies and percentages as brands test lowering markups to drive volume. 3. Geographic "Choppiness" 🗺️ Performance isn't uniform across the US. California faces labor and pricing challenges, while Florida sees volatility from weather and shifting patterns. For expansion, brand recognition doesn't automatically travel—site selection and hyper-local marketing are key. 4. Value vs. Discounting 💡 There’s a clear distinction between "value" and "discounting." Leaders are avoiding deep discounts and leaning into value propositions like bundling and LTOs to drive frequency without eroding brand equity. 5. The World Cup Wildcard ⚽ Brands are preparing for the 2026 World Cup but treating it as "upside" rather than a budget pillar. It’s a massive marketing opportunity, but financial reliance is cautious. The Bottom Line: The theme for 2026 is Getting the House in Order. Success will come from focusing on guest experience, operational consistency, and surgical pricing strategies. #Finance #RestaurantIndustry #2026Outlook #Strategy #Leadership #BlackBoxIntelligence

Joe Henson liked thisJoe Henson liked thisSome of you may have noticed an error in my Mindful Monday post, a big chunk of the article got duplicated. Not the debut I was hoping for on LI, and being new to posting here, I didn't realize articles can only be edited on desktop, not mobile. So there I was, unable to fix it in the moment, watching a formatting glitch turn into a five-alarm fire in my head: "Everyone will think I'm an idiot." "Nobody will read my articles again." That spiral has a name: thought distortion. And it fit the definition perfectly; the thinking was unhelpful, and it wasn't based on fact. A duplicated section didn't mean my credibility was shot; it meant I had a formatting error to fix, which I did. I'm sharing this because it's a little embarrassing, but also a good real-time example of the topic in this week's article: recognizing thought distortions before they run the show. What is as a Thought Distortion A thought distortion is an inaccurate, automatic mental filter that causes your brain to perceive reality in a negative or biased way. It acts like a broken mirror, bending situations to make them seem worse, scarier, or more hopeless than they truly are. My duplicated paragraph triggered two classic ones: mind reading ("everyone will think I'm an idiot") and catastrophizing ("nobody will read my articles again"). Neither had evidence behind it — just a fast, familiar mental shortcut. If you've caught yourself doing the same thing over something small, the full article breaks down where these patterns come from, the most common types, and a simple way to check whether a thought is distortion or just an honest reaction.Recognizing Thought Distortions: How Your Mind Sometimes Lies to YouRecognizing Thought Distortions: How Your Mind Sometimes Lies to YouAlan S.

Joe Henson liked thisBehind every strong executive team is an incredible group of leaders who choose to show up every day, solve problems, support one another, and keep the business moving forward. Being named a finalist for two 2026 OnConferences Top 100 Team Awards is an honor, but what makes me most proud is how these teams earned it. Over the past several months, we have navigated significant change while continuing to grow the business, open new lodges, innovate our menu, recertify our manager training lodges, recertify every hourly trainer, strengthen our culture, and invest in our people. None of that happens because of one person or a small group of people. It happens because of a leadership team that stays focused, stays together, works relentlessly behind the scenes, and never loses sight of our guests, our teams, or our brand. To everyone who has played a role in this recognition, thank you. Your trust and commitment have made all the difference. The best chapters for Twin Peaks are still ahead. Joe Henson liked thisJoe Henson liked thisToday I'm joining Sprocket Sports as VP Marketing. And - fresh out the gate - I am hiring. Once I began to get deep into the interview process, joining became a no brainer and here's why: - Great people. everyone I have met through the process is extremely smart and - most importantly - kind. Thanks to Rich Gallun, Kim Di Nino, Ana Sauerwein, Kyle Sokol, Brett Baker, Samantha Janus and everyone else I've met so far for your transparency and enthusiasm during our discussions. - Exceptional growth trajectory. They are on a tear, and have more than doubled in size in the past 18 months. For anyone in tech, you will know that this has - unfortunately - not been normal in recent times. This felt like a rocket ship that I had to jump on board. - They are in a growth market with momentum. Youth sports holds up even when the wider economy doesn't. Families keep investing in their kids. - A mission I believe in. I have kids, they play sports. Sprocket is a platform that makes that whole process simpler and easier. - For my sins, I absolutely love sports. It affects my emotional well being way more than it should. I spent way too much money getting to two World Cup games recently. I have been to 5 Cubs games this season despite not growing up with baseball. I will watch ten pin bowling on TV. Getting to mesh work with what I love outside of it is really rare. - A massive opportunity. They feel scaling their GTM teams up is the key to their next growth spurt. For a marketer, it doesn't get much more exciting than that. - Majority employee owned. In a world of heavy investor influence, Sprocket is in control of its own destiny. If this sounds in any way interesting to you, you have a strong background in Marketing Ops/Demand Gen and are a builder, I would love to hear from you. Here's the job spec: https://lnkd.in/g39FXVvC Let's go!!

“Joe may have been the most natural leader I ever had the honor of working with. His ability to drive change, efficiency and effectiveness, while still focusing on his staff and their needs, was incredible. He took every concern, suggestion and solution seriously and worked to move it to the next level. I don't think I've ever worked for an executive that looked out for his employees, more than himself, than Joe. Hi receptiveness to feedback, humility, and willingness to stand up for others and give credit where due is exemplary. ”
