The eyeWitness to Atrocities app is used by human rights defenders around the world. Their footage has contributed to investigations and analyses conducted by the United Nations, the International Criminal Court, different European war crimes units, domestic courts, and international police forces.
We worked with the legal team of eyeWitness from the early stages of our investigation, and their dossier was key in locating the alleged incidents. Having access to photo and video that could be authenticated and included a location and timestamp that could be trusted was crucial for our investigators. It allowed us to then search for additional open source information in a more targeted manner â hence making better use of our time and resources.
In 2024, frontline documenters, including independent individuals and human rights organisations, courageously used the eyeWitness app to collect and securely store more than 13,500 verified photos, videos and audio recordings from high-risk areas. This substantial body of evidence is ready for use in legal proceedings, highlighting the appâs vital contribution to global efforts to document and address human rights abuses.
