The European Parliament and its Subcommittee on Human Rights (DROI) play a crucial role in protecting, promoting and defending human rights globally. DROI oversees the respect for human rights in the EU's external policies and actions, so that it remains a central element of the EU's international relations, in compliance with the Treaties. DROI pays a particular attention to ensuring that external policies such as refugee protection, migration and trade remain in line with the EU's human rights obligations and international human rights law.

DROI also assesses human rights situations in countries around the world, raising awareness of human rights violations, and promoting respect for human rights standards and the principles of rule of law and democracy. The subcommittee engages with civil society organizations, human rights defenders, and international bodies to gather information and advocate for improvements and action.

Through exchanges of views, studies and reports, missions to third countries and follow-up to urgency resolutions, DROI contributes to shaping the EU's stance, legislation and other actions in global human rights matters.
