World No Tobacco Day, launched by the World Health Organization in 1987, raises awareness about the dangers of tobacco use and promotes actions to protect public health. Tobacco causes more than 8 million deaths each year, including 1.2 million from secondhand smoke, and is a major cause of cardiovascular disease. Through stronger awareness, prevention efforts, and public health initiatives, communities around the world can help reduce tobacco use and protect future generations.
Menstrual Hygiene Day, observed every year on May 28, is a global movement launched in 2014 to raise awareness about menstrual health and hygiene.
Observed on May 18, this day highlights global efforts to develop an HIV vaccine and recognises the work of researchers, healthcare workers, and communities. Despite decades of research, the virus remains difficult to target because it mutates rapidly.
World Hypertension Day is observed on 17 May to raise awareness of high blood pressure, often called the “silent killer” because it has no symptoms but greatly increases the risk of stroke, heart disease, kidney failure, and premature death.
