You can use Live Transcribe on your Android device to capture speech and sound and see them as text on your screen.
Download and turn on Live Transcribe
Important: If you have a Pixel phone, skip to the Pixel section below.
- Go to system settings and search for Live Transcribe.
- If you can’t find the app, go to Google Play to download the app.
- Tap the Live Transcribe app

- Accept microphone permissions.
Tip: Hold your device microphone near the person or sound that you want to capture.
Turn on Live Transcribe on Pixel devicesLive Transcribe is already installed on Pixel phones and select other Android phones. To turn on Live Transcribe, follow these steps:
- Open your device's Settings app.
- Tap Accessibility, then tap Live Transcribe.
- Tap Open Live Transcribe.
- Accept microphone permissions.
Tips:
- Make sure that you're connected to the Internet unless you’re using one of the offline languages.
- Hold your device microphone near the person or sound that you want to transcribe.
Use Live Transcribe to communicate with others
- Start Live Transcribe.
- You can communicate by:
- Speaking: Start talking into your phone’s microphone.
- Typing: At the bottom of your screen, tap Type
.
- Signing: Use Live Transcribe to translate American Sign Language (ASL) into English text. Your front camera will capture your signs and show the translation on your screen.
- At the bottom right of your screen, tap Sign-to-text
.
- Position your phone so the front camera has a clear view of your hands and face.
- Begin signing.
- You can use any of these actions:
- One-handed signing
- Two-handed signing
- Fingerspelling
- You can use any of these actions:
- At the bottom right of your screen, tap Sign-to-text
- When you’re done with your message, tap the checkmark to display your message.
- Optional:
- Tap your message to expand it on your screen so you can show it to the person you are communicating with. You can then tap Read aloud.
- You can also tap
to play your message through your phone speakers.
Tips:
- If you’re having trouble using sign-to-text, learn how to turn on sign-to-text in gBoard.
- If the translation isn’t correct, try removing the whole sentence and re-signing or using the keyboard to type instead.
You can change your Live Transcribe shortcut. Learn how to use accessibility shortcuts.
To start Live Transcribe, tap the floating accessibility button with shortcut or other customizable options, like:
- Quick Settings
- Volume keys
- Two-finger swipe up
- Accessibility
- To adjust suitable font size, on the outer screen, tap Font size
. This is supported on foldable devices with Android 14 and up.
- To use Live Transcribe in Dual Screen mode, on the main display, tap Dual Screen
.
Use Live Transcribe offline
Download languages for offline use
Download languages for offline use for when your Internet connection is limited, like when you're travelling or in places with a poor connection.
Important:
- On select Android devices and all Pixel devices that run on Android 12 or later, you can download multiple languages, like English, French and more for offline use.
- On select Android devices that run on Android 8, 9, 10 or 11, you can download English for offline use.
- On your device, open Live Transcribe
.
- At the bottom, tap Settings
Additional settings.
- Scroll to 'Primary language' and 'Secondary language'.
- Available for download
:
- If this symbol appears at the end of a language, it means that the language is available for you to download.
- If this symbol doesn’t appear at the end of a language, it means that it’s not available for you to download.
- Downloading
: Means you’re downloading the language.
- Done
: Means that the language is already downloaded.
- Available for download
Set offline preferences
To ensure that you get an uninterrupted transcription experience, Live Transcribe automatically turns on offline transcription. If you’d like to change this setting, follow the steps below.
- On your device, open Live Transcribe

- At the bottom, tap Settings
Additional settings.
- At the bottom, tap Advanced
Offline transcriptions.
- Turn off Transcribe offline.
Manage your transcription history
Important: If transcription history is turned off, your transcriptions will be deleted after 24 hours.
You can find your transcription history in Live Transcribe for up to three days. After three days, it's automatically deleted, and you can delete your transcription history any time. To find your transcriptions, scroll up on the transcription screen.
Audio and transcriptions are securely encrypted and temporarily stored in the Live Transcribe app.
- Open Live Transcribe and tap Settings

- Turn Transcription history on or off.
- Open Live Transcribe and tap Settings
.
- Tap Additional settings
Delete history.
- Open Live Transcribe.
- Tap Settings
Export all stored transcription.
Tips:
- To copy and paste text from the transcription:
- Touch and hold the text.
- Tap Copy.
- To copy the full transcription:
- Touch and hold the text.
- Tap Select all
Copy.
Tips to use Live Transcribe
Clear the screen- While Live Transcribe is running, tap Settings
.
- Tap Search transcription.
- Type your search term.
- Tap to view a search result in context.
Along with speech, Live Transcribe can show you other sounds, including human sounds like 'Laughing' or environmental sounds like 'Doorbell' or 'Music'.
To hide or show other sounds:
- While Live Transcribe is running, tap Settings
.
- Tap Additional settings.
- Tap Show sound labels.
To see how much sound is present, look at the sound indicator at the top right of your screen .
When you hold a transcription, the transcript will stop temporarily, but continue running in the background. When you resume the transcription, you will see everything that was transcribed while on hold.
- While Live Transcribe is running, tap Settings

- Tap Show hold button.
- To return to Live Transcribe, tap Back
or swipe to go back.
- To hold or resume the transcript, tap Hold
.
Change Live Transcribe settings
Add custom wordsIf your conversations often include uncommon words or phrases, you can add them so that they can be transcribed.
- While Live Transcribe is running, tap Settings
.
- Tap Additional settings.
- Tap Custom words.
- Tap Add word.
You can get notified with a vibration when someone speaks a word or name that you specify.
- While Live Transcribe is running, tap Settings
.
- Tap Additional settings.
- Tap Vibrate when name is spoken.
- Tap Add name.
Through gestures
- Two-finger gesture: Use pinch to scale or pinch to zoom.
Through settings
- While Live Transcribe is running, tap Settings
.
- To change the text size, use the slider.
- While Live Transcribe is running, tap Settings
.
- To set your primary language, tap Primary language, then choose a language from the list.
- Optional: To set a secondary language, tap Secondary language, then choose a language from the list.
Tip: To change language quickly while Live Transcribe is running, tap the language (such as English) at the bottom of your screen.
You can use an external microphone instead of the microphone on your device.
- Connect an external microphone to your device.
- While Live Transcribe is running, tap Settings
.
- Tap Additional settings.
- Tap Microphone.
- Select the external microphone from the list.
Use limitations
Google does not intend use of Live Transcribe to create obligations under the US Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, as amended ('HIPAA'). Google makes no representations that Live Transcribe satisfies HIPAA requirements.
