Summary

Follow-up to #13576. What is left there is all of one shape: Jest warns about an option that sits in the right place, or says nothing about one it throws away. Four causes.

The config that supplies the global config was validated as a project config. readConfig decided this itself, by comparing the project path with the directory of the root config. That misfires whenever the two differ but the config is the same file:

  • A project directory without its own config resolves, by traversal, to the root config. With projects: ['<rootDir>/packages/*'] and one package that has no jest.config.js, the root config's own bail/passWithNoTests/… came back as not supported in an individual project configuration. Move it to the root configuration. They were already in the root configuration.
  • With jest --projects a b and no --config, readConfigs takes the global config from the first project, so its global options really do drive the run — testFailureExitCode: 7 in a gives exit code 7, the same option in b is ignored. Jest warned anyway, and pointed at a root config that does not exist.

readConfigs is the only place that knows which config supplied the global config, so it now decides and passes that down instead of readConfig guessing from path shapes.

reporters, coverageReporters and workerIdleMemoryLimit were accepted per project and silently dropped. They were in ProjectConfig and in the project schema, but every consumer reads them off the global config. They cannot be per-project as things stand — runners are keyed by runner + runnerOptions rather than by project, coverage is one aggregated map, and the reporters are a single pipeline — so they leave the project surface and warn like every other global-only option.

cwd and runnerOptions type-checked in a project config and then warned. They were in InitialProjectOptions only so that Pick<..., keyof ProjectConfig> resolved. Both are computed during normalization, so they are gone from the project type.

maxWorkers and coverageThreshold in a project config produced no warning at all. maxWorkers took the allowsMultipleTypes branch in _validate before the example config was consulted, so it never reached the unknown-option path. coverageThreshold is in the recursive denylist, which suppresses the unknown-option report as well as the recursion the entry is there for — and that entry only means something when the option exists in the schema, so a project config no longer carries it.

Two notes for review:

  • Typing the two example configs in ValidConfig.ts as Required<...> changes nothing today, and turns "option added to the types but forgotten in the schema" — fix(jest-config): add missing options to ValidConfig to prevent spurious warnings #16224 — into a compile error.
  • Dropping the parsedConfigs[0].globalConfig fallback is breaking, so it is a TODO for the next major rather than part of this PR. The shape I would go for: read the global config from process.cwd() when several projects are passed without --config, the way the argv.config branch already does.

The docs list of root-only options was wrong in both directions, so it is rewritten here and in the 30.4/30.5 versioned copies — those releases ignore the same options, they just do it quietly.

Test plan

  • packages/jest-config/src/__tests__/normalize.test.ts: each newly global-only option (reporters, coverageReporters, workerIdleMemoryLimit, coverageThreshold, maxWorkers) warns once in a project config.
  • packages/jest-validate/src/__tests__/validate.test.ts: maxWorkers is reported as unknown when the example config does not declare it, and still throws on the wrong type when it does.
  • e2e/__tests__/multiProjectRunner.test.ts: a root config that a project resolves back to emits no warning; with --projects p1 p2 and no root config, only p2 is warned about while p1's testFailureExitCode still applies.

`readConfigs` decided whether a config was read "as a project" by comparing
the project path with the directory of the root config. That misfires in two
common setups:

- a project directory without its own config resolves, by traversal, to the
  root config, so the root config's own global options were reported as
  "not supported in an individual project configuration"
- with `jest --projects a b` and no `--config`, the first project supplies
  the global config, so its global options do apply to the run - while Jest
  told the user to move them to a root config that does not exist

`readConfigs` is the only place that knows which config supplies the global
config, so it now decides and passes that down instead of `readConfig`
guessing from path shapes.

`reporters`, `coverageReporters` and `workerIdleMemoryLimit` were accepted in
a project config and copied into `ProjectConfig`, but every consumer reads
them off the global config, so per project they were dropped without a word.
They cannot be per-project as things stand: runners are keyed by `runner` and
`runnerOptions` rather than by project, coverage is one aggregated map, and
the reporters form a single pipeline.

`cwd` and `runnerOptions` were part of `InitialProjectOptions` only so that
`Pick<..., keyof ProjectConfig>` type-checked, so a project config could name
them and then be told they were probably a typing mistake. Both are computed
during normalization.

Typing the two example configs as `Required<...>` makes an option that is
added to the types but forgotten in the schema a compile error rather than a
"probably a typing mistake" warning for the user.

Both were dropped without a warning. `maxWorkers` took the
`allowsMultipleTypes` branch before the example config was consulted, so it
never reached the unknown-option path; `coverageThreshold` sits in the
recursive denylist, which suppresses the unknown-option report as well as the
recursion the entry is there for.

The denylist entry only means something when the option exists in the schema,
so a project config no longer carries it.
The list named `coverageReporters` and `reporters` but left out everything
else the project schema rejects, and it left out the options that a project
config accepted and then dropped. The versioned copies get the same list -
30.4 and 30.5 ignore those options too, they just do it quietly.

Comparing the project path with the directory of the global config was meant
as a conservative extra gate, but it hides a project that genuinely is one:
with `--config global.config.js --projects . p2`, a `jest.config.js` in the
current directory sits in that same directory while `global.config.js`
supplies the global config, so its global-only options were dropped in
silence. Whether a config supplies the global config is the whole question,
so that is the only gate now - which also covers a JSON `--config`, where
there is no config path to compare against.
