MY PRODUCTS
This is my completed digipack, poster and also a screenshot
from the opening of my music video. There is a clear visual link
between the three products which will help the audience with
recognising the image and instantly connecting the products
together.
LOCATION
I named the album ‘High Tide’ due to the song being called ‘Ocean Drive’. This is because both of
these titles connote locations such as the beach so I was able to meet audiences expectations
when they see I chose to film and take photos for my digipack and poster at the beach. This made
it easy to decide where to film as the words ‘Ocean’ and ‘High Tide’ would clearly suggest a beach
location to the audience. Therefore I chose to have the front of my album cover, my poster and
the opening of my video using exactly the same location, which is evident in the images below. In
doing this I believe my products compliment each other and work effectively in creating a clear
visual link between the products, helping to set a distinctive brand image for this artist and music.
COLOURI colour corrected my film, digipack and poster to add the same slightly
pink tone to ensure I had a clear colour scheme for all of my products.
Through genre research I also found that many EDM album covers use a
bright colour scheme so by colour correcting I conformed to the genre. I
think the bright colours reflect the positive feeling created by listening to
EDM music as it is designed to make people dance and feel happy.
Therefore the bright colours used will reflect the audience’s mood when
listening to the music and watching the video. Additionally by using a
specific colour scheme the audience are able to recognise the products
and associate them with each other as they are clearly linked.
The screenshots of my music video show how I colour corrected the
original shot to add a pink tone. I did this on premiere pro by adding the
channel mixer effect and edited the levels of ‘red-blue’.
FONT
I used the same font for all my products to
ensure it was consistent and also links the
products together. My chosen font was
‘Berlin Sans FB’ and to the right are
screenshots from each of my products
demonstrating how I have used this font in all
them. From genre research I found it was
conventional to use a font which is slightly
rounded to connote the relaxed and positive
nature of the music. A softer font such as
‘Berlin Sans FB’ fits the desired appearance to
create a positive atmosphere for the music
video, digipack and poster.
SHAPES
Through looking at existing EDM album covers, I found that made
incorporated shapes, often circles, into the design of the digipack. To
conform to this I added a semi-opaque ring (made by reducing the opacity of
the shape) around the list of songs on the back of my album. Below are
examples of existing EDM products which include shapes into their design.
REPRESENTING THE ARTIST
I did not think it was essential to include a portrait image of my
artist on the front of my digipack or poster. This is because Duke
Dumont has not done so himself, and through research of this
genre and analysing real album covers of this genre I found many
EDM artists also did not feature on the album. However I did
incorporate an image of my artist into my ancillary texts by adding
an image of him in the inside of the digipack. Below are examples
of Duke Dumont’s single albums and a full album demonstrating
how he does not use images of himself to sell the products and
does not make clear visual links between the song and the music
video. However the screenshot from the inside of my digipack
shows how I challenged this in order to use the artist as a method
to sell the product to the audience.
GENRE CONVENTIONS
I believe my digipack does match those of conventional EDM album covers.
This is because a key location often used is images of the beach or sea and
vibrant colours are used. Tiesto’s album cover is set where there is palm
trees, so likely to be a location near the beach, similarly Calvin Harris’ album
cover has images of palm tree leaves, and Sigma’s album is an image of the
beach and sea. As discussed before the front cover of my album is also an
image of the beach. Furthermore the use of the pink tone and bright
colours on my digipack are also seen to be conventional from these
examples of real media projects. This is because pinks, blues, greens,
yellows and oranges are all chosen by the artists of these albums. The fonts
used by these artists also demonstrate how I conformed to genre
conventions. For example Tiesto used a very soft, rounded font which is
similar to ‘Berlin Sans FB’.
On the digipack and poster and featured a barcode, social media and iTunes links and also
copyright information to make the products appear as realistic as possible. I think this also
adds a professional feel to my products as these features would be essential in the real
world.

CONCLUSION
Through looking at existing media products it could be argued that my digipack, poster and
music video would be accepted by the audience. This is because I made obvious visual links
such as a consistent location, colour scheme and font which will help the audience to
recognise the products and associate them together. Therefore they work together to
promote the other products to the audience. I also conformed to genre convention which
would help to effectively encourage my target audience of EDM listeners if they recognise it
as a product they would chose to listen to and watch. Additionally I included features such as
copyright information and a record label which are always present on real products, which
helped to add a professional look to my digipack and poster.
