Students will create a world map out of a paper plate, and identify and label various locations
such as the North and South Poles; the equator, the prime meridian, the tropics, the arctic circles,
and the hemispheres. Student will also create a diagram of their art project in their science
journals. This lesson will be completed with a summative assessment in which students label
locations on a blank world map.
Dancing Locations: Covers dance and identifying Pacific Ocean, rivers, valleys, and mountain
passes and explain their effects on the growth of town’s locations. Students are required to create
an original dance routine that describes their location and class should be able to identify
location through dance routine.
Regions of California Performance: Covers theater arts with pre-production work and social
science with an emphasis on California’s regions and its effects on the ecosystem. Students will
portray people living in one of four regions (desert, coast, central valley, and mountain regions)
and how their livelihood depends on the region they inhabit. Students will also give a brief
explanation of the region and locate the areas on a map.
Maps, Charts, and Pictures: Covers maps, charts, and pictures to describe how communities in
California vary in land use, vegetation, wildlife, climate, population density, architecture,
services, and transportation.
Latitude and Longitude Activity: Covers longitude and latitude. Students will create a model
reference to help them remember the directions and over all concept of an x and y axis. Students
will use two popsicle sticks to create a longitude and latitude model and use it to complete a
worksheet activity that requires them to plot different points on a map.
