About Practice Space
This site is called Practice Space.
After 20 years of writing separately in a lot of different places, I’ve pulled it all together in one place.
I wanted a title that wasn’t specific to any particular domain (since I write on several topics).
Practice seemed like an appropriate theme: “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”
The name captures what I write about, across a variety of topics and domains: a place for practicing with new technology, honing the craft, working through ideas.
The site has four sections relating to “the practice”, which you should be able to subscribe to separately, depending on your interests:
1. Research Advice – Writings summarizing the advice I gave in the research course that I created at Georgia Tech in 2006 continues. We ran it for nearly a decade to give Ph.D. students the practical guidance on doing research that traditional coursework doesn’t cover. Full course materials: https://lnkd.in/gXAxCexP
2. Updates – Work from my Network Operations and Internet Security lab (https://noise-lab.net) at UChicago, posts on emerging technology, teaching, etc. Basically, the classic blog for the day job.
3. Music – All things music, including songwriting process and tips (including my upcoming EP), production notes, studio experiences. (Nothing here just yet but that’s about to change. Wanting to write more on this topic aside from on this platform was a motivation for finally excavating all of my writing from the archives and resuscitating the content in the first place.)
4. Running – Endurance training, running advice, Chicago running guides, race reports.
Some of the “update” posts may not make chronological sense, as they have relative time references and not dates. I’ll try to fix that over time.

I hope you subscribe. I love writing about various topics and sharing my knowledge and experiences with others around me. I’m interested in a lot of things, so hopefully you find something here too that piques your interest!
