Moonfin v2.9.0 Release Notes github

Moonfin 2.9.0 brings the TV apps up to date with Moonfin-Core 2.6.0. There are three new detail screen styles, Spotlight, Nouveau and Minimalist, Kids Mode strips the app back behind a PIN, and if your server runs the Achievement Badges plugin you can see all of it on the TV. Live TV got a rebuilt guide and a quick channel changer, other Jellyfin apps can now control the TV, and loading animations, skeletons and a rebuilt screensaver come across from the other clients. SyncPlay finally holds together on Samsung and LG sets, and a long list of subtitle, audio and focus fixes comes with it, including ASS and PGS subtitles showing from the start on Samsung and Moonfin opening again after switching apps on LG.

What's New

Three New Detail Screen Styles

  • Spotlight. The artwork comes first, with Play and a few actions in the hero and the rest under More Actions. Below it sits a band of summary cards with counts, for Seasons and Episodes, Cast, Crew and Studios, Chapters and Extras, More Like This, Collections and more, and each one opens a pop-up grid. Extras are sorted into Behind the Scenes, Deleted Scenes, Featurettes, Interviews, Scenes and Shorts.
  • Nouveau scrolls the whole screen as one page, with the hero over the backdrop and every section stacked below as its own row instead of a tab. It opens on the season you're up to, selecting an episode's artwork plays it, and a footer holds the studios, the Seerr details and the file information.
  • Minimalist is the artwork, one row of buttons and the episodes with season tabs. Movies, series, seasons, episodes and videos get it, and anything else falls back to Spotlight.
  • All three are under Settings > Details Screen > Details Screen Style and in the setup wizard, which brings it to five styles.

Details Screen

  • A customizable metadata row. Settings > Details Screen > Media Details and Spoilers > Metadata Row lets you show, hide and reorder the year, parental rating, runtime and seasons, status, upcoming episode, genres and Seerr availability, and it syncs through Moonbase.
  • Upcoming episode air dates. Series show when the next episode airs, as Today, Tomorrow, a weekday or a date with the season and episode, from Sonarr through Moonbase with TMDB as the fallback.
  • Action Buttons on Screen. Pick how many buttons stay visible before the rest fold under More, from Play only up to ten, or All for a row that scrolls sideways.
  • A File Information tab. Modern's Details tab is now File Information, with the file size, the date it was added, the audio and subtitle tracks, and whether the file can direct play. When it can't, it says why in plain words with a hint, like turning on passthrough or raising the bitrate limit.
  • A long press menu on cards. Hold OK on a card almost anywhere for Play or Resume, Mark Watched, Hide from Continue Watching or Next Up, favorites, collections and playlists. Remove from Collection shows on the collection's own page, and admins also get Refresh Metadata, Identify and Change Artwork.
  • Collections play through as a queue, starting with the film you're partway through or the first unwatched one, and they get a Shuffle button too.
  • Missing collection items. A collection now shows the films you don't have next to the ones you do, in release order with a Seerr badge, and selecting one opens its request page. Show Missing Collection Items is in the Seerr settings, and Show Seerr Availability Badges hides the season dots if you'd rather not see them.
  • The Seerr section matches the other clients. Genres, networks and keywords fold into one Genres and Tags chip, the facts sit in a grid with a new episode count, Recommendations comes before Similar, and the collection banner moved up above the facts.
  • Seerr requests show as a poster grid, each tile with its type, status, requester and date. A download bar says how much has come down, like 1.6 GB of 4.4 GB, then shows Importing once it's done.
  • Seerr titles have a Trailer button that plays the trailer Seerr already knows about.
  • Person pages were rebuilt. Filmographies split into Movies, Series, Guest Appearances and Music Videos, with Crew Contributions and Appearances from Seerr when it's set up. A person from a Seerr-only title opens the same screen instead of a separate one.
  • Badges are easier to read. Watched checks, unplayed counts and Seerr dots get a white ring and a shadow, and favorites become a round red heart.
  • Recommendations match the other clients. A Recommendation Source setting for More Like This and Since You Watched picks between Moonfin Recommends, Jellyfin Recommends, TMDb Similarity through Seerr, and Hybrid. Moonfin Recommends uses Moonbase's server scoring where it's available, and More Like This shows up to twenty titles.
  • Long button labels scroll when they're focused, and episode cards read as E1: Title.

Anime Markers

  • Anime episodes get Filler, Mixed, Recap, Manga Canon and Anime Canon markers, plus Subbed, Dubbed or Subbed/Dubbed from the audio in your files. They show on episode, season and movie cards, the detail screens, and the Next Up card in the player, once your admin turns them on in Moonbase.

Kids Mode and Parental Controls

  • Kids Mode is under Settings > Account & Security. Turning it on asks for a new four digit PIN, which is cleared when you leave.
  • What goes away. Settings shrink to Exit Kids Mode. Libraries, Live TV, Seerr and SyncPlay leave the navigation, and the Live TV, Recordings and Seerr screens send you back Home. Home keeps the My Media tiles, Recently Added and one combined Continue Watching and Next Up row, and search drops its Seerr results.
  • Detail screens always use Minimalist, with only Play, Shuffle and Favorite, and no description or technical details.
  • After five wrong PINs the wait grows, up to fifteen minutes. Your own layout comes back untouched when you exit, and Kids Mode doesn't sync, so it stays on the TV you turned it on for.
  • Blocked ratings block everywhere. They only ever filtered home rows. They now cover search, suggestions, favorites, libraries, genres, people, the detail screen and playback, SyncPlay and the next episode included, and a blocked title shows a padlock and won't play.
  • Blocking a rating blocks everything stronger too. Ratings that can't be ranked sit in their own section that only blocks itself, and an episode with no rating goes by its series. The list is stored per server and per user instead of once for the whole TV.
  • The sign-in PIN gets the same lockout, and it's now stored as a hash instead of the digits.

Achievement Badges

  • Moonfin draws the Achievement Badges plugin on the TV. If your Jellyfin server runs it, Settings > General > Achievement Badges opens your rank and score, a badge showcase, a page for each badge with its progress and the titles that would finish it, and daily and weekly quests with one reroll each.
  • Power-ups, a shop, a stats screen, a leaderboard and an activity feed come with it, along with avatars and rank titles to wear. Moonbase isn't needed, and Emby servers don't have it.

Live TV

  • The guide was rebuilt. A hero band previews the focused program with its own artwork, cells are tinted by genre, ended programs fade, and episode titles show with their numbering. Earlier and Later buttons and the Fast Forward and Rewind keys page through the rows.
  • It opens on the channel you last watched, and Back returns there first before leaving. The channel sort is saved and synced.
  • A quick channel changer. Press Up during live playback, or the new Channels button in the player, for a carousel of channels in guide order that wraps around. If a channel fails to tune, the previous one comes back, and the carousel closes after two minutes without a press.
  • A Live TV button in the top bar and the sidebar goes straight to the guide when your server has Live TV. It's on by default, and Live TV leaves the Libraries list while it's shown.

Remote Control

  • Other Jellyfin apps can control the TV. Play, pause, stop, seek, next and previous, the TV's own volume and mute, messages, the d-pad, audio and subtitle tracks, repeat and shuffle, and items sent to play now, play next or add to the queue.
  • Your phone can type into the TV's search. A phone remote can open Search on the TV and fill it in live as you type on the phone.

Playback

  • Loading animations from the other clients, under Settings > Extras > Loading Animation with a live preview. Pick the image, the size, a position or bouncing, the speed and whether the text shows, and they sync through Moonbase.
  • Chapter Marks, off by default, mark where each chapter starts on the seek bar.
  • Pause While Scrubbing is now a choice, and trickplay previews are preloaded so scrubbing keeps up.
  • Current Time joins the player's time slot options.
  • A subtitle timeline in the offset overlay. Adjusting the subtitle offset shows the cues around the playhead on a ten second ruler, so you can see where they should land instead of adjusting by ear. It works for text subtitles.
  • The full subtitle palette. Fifteen colors for text, shadow and background, for SDR and HDR.
  • PGS subtitles play straight from the file on LG. Embedded PGS in a direct played MKV is read from the file itself, instead of waiting for the server to pull a subtitle file out first, which on a large file could take a long time.
  • Wait for ASS/SSA subtitles, a new LG setting that holds the video until styled subtitles are ready, so the first lines show.
  • Trailers play at up to 1080p an...

v2.8.2

Choose a tag to compare

@RadicalMuffinMan RadicalMuffinMan released this 24 Aug 23:20

Moonfin v2.8.2 Release Notes github

A follow-up to 2.8.1. The big one is languages: Moonfin on TV went from seven to sixty-seven, matching what the other Moonfin clients ship. Alongside that, two device profile bugs that were sending perfectly playable 4K files to the transcoder are fixed, the home layout stops fighting with what your server pushed, and a handful of screens that were squished or overflowing on older sets now lay out properly.

What's New

Languages

  • Moonfin on TV now ships sixty-seven languages, up from seven. Every translation from Moonfin-Core was brought across, and the strings that were still hardcoded in English got localized along with them.
  • The build now drops the duplicate copy of each language before packaging. The app already loads its strings as part of the bundle, so shipping the separate files as well was putting every language in the package twice, which is megabytes on a TV.

Details Screen

  • Versions of the same title show which library they came from. The server doesn't say which library a version sits in, but each version is an item in its own right, so Moonfin looks the library up. Names only appear when the versions actually differ, since labelling them helps nobody when every copy is in the same place.
  • A server button on the details screen. Rows and search show one card for a title however many of your servers have it, and this offers back the copies that were folded away, so you can pick which server to play from.
  • Duplicate titles are folded away in more places, now covering collections and the rest of the browse rows.

Playback

  • Previous button restarts the current video when there's nothing queued behind it, rather than doing nothing, and the button shows either way.

Bug Fixes

Playback

  • Samsung and LG sets stop transcoding HDR10+ files they can play. HDR10+ rides on top of an HDR10 base picture, so a set that only reads the static metadata still renders it. It was being held back to 2019 and newer Samsung models, and the dual layer Dolby Vision range types that carry HDR10+ weren't offered at all.
  • A bare Dolby Vision stream is no longer offered to sets without Dolby Vision.
  • LG sets that won't answer what panel they have are no longer treated as 1080p. Every source Moonfin asks is a service call the TV can refuse, and a set that answered nothing read as 1080p, which dropped the advertised HEVC level and sent every 4K file to the transcoder. Moonfin now asks the system property service as well when the config service withholds the keys, takes any source saying 4K as settled, and treats a wide video plane or an OLED panel as 4K too, since LG has never shipped an OLED below it.
  • Skipping an outro no longer kills the player. The Next Up countdown was asking the server for the episode that was already playing.
  • Auto selected subtitles survive autoplay. The next episode was being handed an explicit off instead of being left to pick for itself, so Smart and Foreign Audio modes stopped working after the first episode.
  • Theme music stops when the TV goes to standby instead of playing on into art mode.

Home Screen

  • Rows your server pushed show up. A collection or genre row set as a default on the server was only rendered if the TV happened to find the same row itself. It now builds the pushed rows the same way, so a row from the server and one found locally are the same row.
  • The TV stops overwriting settings you never touched. Every automatic sync was sending the whole profile back, and the server records each value it receives as the viewer's own explicit choice, which then outranks anything an admin sets later. Only the settings that actually changed are sent now.
  • Home sections the TV has no row for are kept, instead of being dropped from a layout you built on another client.
  • The pointer no longer scrolls home rows as it passes over them, and picking up the arrow keys drops pointer mode.

Interface

  • The Seerr filter and season lists stop collapsing on older sets.
  • The player's cast and crew sheet matches the other clients and keeps the focused card on screen.
  • The detail screen action buttons stay circular when the row runs out of room.
  • Search result posters are larger.
  • The logs screen fits its panel instead of overflowing it.
  • The music player backdrop covers the screen the whole time its colors drift, rather than pulling away from the edges.
  • The on-screen keyboard opens the accent row as soon as you hold a key, without waiting for the key to start repeating.
  • Episode descriptions stay hidden where you asked for them to be, now covering Next Up cards and episode lists. The rule applies to films and episodes only, and checks whether there's an overview to hide in the first place.

Defaults

  • The skip button auto hide now defaults to off, matching the other Moonfin clients. Turn it back on in the player settings if you prefer it.

v2.8.1

Choose a tag to compare

@RadicalMuffinMan RadicalMuffinMan released this 21 Aug 07:07

Moonfin v2.8.1 Release Notes github

A follow-up to 2.8.0 that adds a setup wizard for new installs, fixes the Seerr and layout problems people reported, and brings more things in line with the other Moonfin clients.

What's New

Setup Wizard

  • New installs now get a setup wizard. After you sign in for the first time, Moonfin walks you through where you want the navigation bar, which media bar style you like, and whether you prefer the classic or modern home rows and detail screens. Every choice shows a live preview built from your own library artwork, so you can see what you're picking instead of guessing from a name.
  • It only asks about things you haven't already decided. If a setting is already stored or comes down from your server profile, that question is skipped, so a second TV signed into the same account usually never sees it. You can skip the whole thing, and skipping doesn't write anything, so nothing gets locked in. There's a Run setup again entry in Settings if you want to revisit your choices.

Looks

  • A new Aya media bar style. It's a rounded hero frame that floats in the page rather than filling the screen, with the title's logo in the corner, thin bar indicators, and the page backdrop staying alive behind it. That brings the media bar to six styles plus Off.
  • The Glass theme is here, matching the other clients. It's a dark frosted look with translucent surfaces and a blue accent. The blur only applies when Glass is the theme you've selected, so nothing else pays for it, and older TVs that can't blur simply get the plain translucent version.
  • Seerr genre cards look like Seerr's own. Each genre now gets its own duotone color treatment with the genre name in large type across the card, so Action reads red and Horror reads black, and a film that sits in several genres no longer shows the same artwork on every card.

Matching the Other Moonfin Clients

  • Libraries can group into rows. Movie and TV libraries can now be broken into rows by Genre, Parental Rating, Decade, or Studio, set per library. Rating groups are ordered mildest to strongest rather than alphabetically, and decades run newest first.
  • The playlist library groups by what each playlist holds, splitting into Video, Audio, Audiobook, Book, Photo, and Mixed rows. This is on by default and can be turned off in the library settings panel.
  • Merge Recent Rows by Type folds your per-library Recently Added and Recently Released rows into one row per type, deduplicated and sorted by date. It's off by default.
  • A Playlist Order sort for the playlist and collection home rows, so curated order is honored instead of being re-sorted alphabetically.
  • Press Back to return to the top of a scrolled home screen, library grid, favorites list, or Seerr Discover, instead of leaving the screen. A second press exits as before.
  • Trailer captions on the media bar, showing YouTube caption tracks on trailer previews, preferring human-written tracks over automatic ones and matching your interface language.

Bug Fixes

Seerr

  • Search results are requestable again. Opening a Seerr result from search landed on the library detail screen, which showed a Play button and other controls that did nothing because your server doesn't have the title. Search now goes through the same path as Discover and Browse.
  • Browse keeps your filters and your place. Setting filters, scrolling, opening a title, and pressing Back used to dump you at the top of the grid with your filters cleared. It now returns to the same filters, the same scroll position, and the same card focused.
  • Fixed the Seerr screens when the navigation bar is on top. The requests button no longer overlaps the clock, the requests list scrolls as you move down it, the browse, collection, and person screens fill the display, and you can move back down out of the navigation bar from the requests list.
  • Fixed Seerr messages appearing in English for everyone on a translated interface. The strings had been renamed from Jellyseerr to Seerr in the code but not in the language files, so every lookup missed.
  • External row items open something now. Titles from plugin custom rows and the Radarr and Sonarr calendars that only carry an IMDb id used to do nothing when selected. They now resolve through Seerr, and a title your server already has swaps to the real library item so it plays instead of showing a request page.

Playback

  • The LG screensaver no longer interrupts playback. The guard that tells the TV to stay awake was checking for an API the app never actually loads, so on every webOS device it quietly gave up before registering. It now goes through the app's own service bridge.
  • Autoplay Next Episode is honored again. The next episode started regardless of the setting, whether you turned it off on the TV or in the server plugin. Reported on Tizen, but webOS had the same bug.
  • Play on a series or season starts the right episode. It used to always take Next Up and start from zero. It now targets the episode you're actually part way through and resumes where you left off, skipping episodes your server doesn't have.
  • Dolby Vision files direct play on HDR10 Samsung sets instead of transcoding. The device profile only advertised Dolby Vision on true DV panels, but the server reports a bare Dolby Vision range when it can't tell which base layer a file uses, and these TVs play the HEVC base layer fine.

Interface

  • Series thumbnails work on classic rows. The Display Series Thumbnails switch was only read on wide rows, so episode cards on classic rows ignored it entirely.
  • The home backdrop updates again with classic rows when the row overlay is turned off, where nothing was feeding it a focused item.
  • The media bar logo starts below the top navigation bar instead of drawing underneath it.
  • The same title held on two servers or in two libraries now shows once, keeping the copy that has your watch progress. This covers search, Continue Watching, Next Up, Random, and Favorites, and duplicates no longer eat search result slots.
  • Changing the interface language sticks. The setting was pushed to the server on a delay, and the reload happened first, so the next sync handed the old language back.
  • Resetting a customization profile now resets your device too. It deleted the profile on the server but left every setting on the TV untouched. There's also a new Reset Ratings option in the ratings settings.

Note

A few defaults changed in this release. Playlist libraries group by type by default, and the collections and playlists home rows now sort by Playlist Order instead of alphabetically. You can change both in settings.

v2.8.0

Choose a tag to compare

@RadicalMuffinMan RadicalMuffinMan released this 17 Aug 00:11

Moonfin v2.8.0 Release Notes github

This is a big one. There's a proper in-app keyboard, a rebuilt sign-in screen that finds your server on its own, a rebuilt Live TV guide, and Seerr is now woven through the whole app instead of living on its own screen. On top of that, the settings, home rows, detail screens, media bars, library, and games library were all reworked to match the other Moonfin clients.

Features

The In-App Keyboard

  • Typing on your TV is finally decent. Moonfin now has its own on-screen keyboard instead of relying on the TV's. It follows your language with QWERTY, AZERTY, and QWERTZ layouts, has symbol and number pages, a phone-style pad for PINs and ports, long press for accented characters, key repeat, cursor keys, and a paste key.
  • It knows what you're typing. A server address field offers https:// and :8096 chips, an email field offers @gmail.com, and so on. Signing in suggests servers and usernames you've used before, and search suggests your recent searches plus matches from what's already on screen.
  • If you'd rather keep your TV's own keyboard, there's a setting under Appearance to switch back.

Sign In and Server Discovery

  • Moonfin can find your server by itself now. The sign-in screen actually scans your network instead of only offering servers you typed in by hand.
  • Sign-in was rebuilt into a proper flow that opens on your saved server's user list, defaults to Quick Connect when your server supports it, still lists your saved users when the server is unreachable, and lets you hold Select to forget a server you don't use anymore. Emby Connect is part of the same flow.

Matching the Other Moonfin Clients

  • The settings screens were rebuilt to match the other clients, and the behaviors behind them are now actually implemented. That includes automatic audio track selection that skips commentary and honors audio description, a fallback subtitle language and SDH preference, resume rewind, separate skip forward and back lengths, maximum resolution and audio channel caps with downmix to stereo, a passthrough mode picker that adds DTS and DTS-HD, SyncPlay drift correction settings, OLED mode, an auto-login behavior picker, and a screensaver clock mode. About gained a live update check and QR code links, and custom home rows gained a manual builder with sorting and editing.
  • Home rows got a parity pass with a new Banner image type, unplayed episode count and favorite badges, a Studios row, new Audio and Rewatch row toggles, playlist rows that can expand a series into its episodes, and padding sliders for both row styles. A few defaults changed: Continue Watching and Next Up now merge into one row by default, card focus zoom is on, and series thumbnails are off.
  • Both detail screens were reworked with a Read More and Read Less overview box, Cast and Crew split apart so directors and writers get their own list, per-track Seerr status pills for HD and 4K, a Show Technical Details setting for the codec and file size badges, and metadata on season screens.
  • The media bars caught up too. Trailer previews now work in the MakD style, a finished trailer advances the carousel instead of sitting on a still frame, the screensaver no longer cuts off a playing trailer, and YouTube trailers keep hunting for a 720p or better source.
  • The sidebar is vertically centered with Settings moved into the main nav group, panels and buttons picked up the frosted glass treatment, and text fields are properly rounded.

Live TV

  • The guide and Live TV player were rebuilt. The EPG is now a virtualized grid with genre color coding, a filter rail for movies, series, sports, news, kids, premieres, and favorites, channel sorting, a date picker, and Now, Earlier, and Later controls. The guide no longer blanks out while scrolling with the d-pad, and the channel list isn't capped at 50 anymore.
  • Recordings were rebuilt into Series Recordings, Scheduled in the Next 24 Hours, and Recent Recordings rails, with confirmation before cancelling.
  • The live player OSD gained a channel number badge, channel and program names, a program progress bar with start and end times, and a Guide button. Pausing now keeps the controls up.

Seerr

  • Seerr moved onto the shared detail screen. A library title matched to Seerr now shows Request, Request 4K, Cancel, Report Issue, and Manage Requests right on its detail page, along with a status badge, live download progress, per-season availability dots, and Seerr's genre and network chips, production facts, similar titles, and recommendations. Seerr-only titles open on that same screen with the full backdrop, cast, and person links instead of a separate bespoke screen.
  • A Seerr shortcuts row on the home screen with Discover, Movies, Series, Requests, and Issues tiles.
  • A watchlist button on both detail layouts, so you can add a title to your Seerr watchlist without leaving the screen.
  • A full sort and filter panel on Seerr browse covering sort direction, genres, TV status, language, minimum rating, minimum votes, runtime, and release decade.
  • Request rules now match the other clients. A still-running series that's fully in your library keeps offering Request More, a series with an open request reopens when seasons remain unrequested, Cancel only appears when Seerr would actually allow it, and 4K requests show up for ordinary users instead of only those who can read the server list.

Library and Games

  • Rate titles yourself. A new rating button on the detail screen lets you rate a title as a like or dislike, out of five stars, or as a score out of ten, whichever style you pick in settings. Your rating can show alongside the other sources in the ratings row, and libraries gained a Liked and Disliked filter.
  • A large expansion of library sorts and filters. New sorts include date episode added, play count, and album, artist, track number, and random for music, and equal-ranked items now keep a stable order across pages. New filters cover in-progress items, unreleased series, features like subtitles, trailers, extras, and theme songs, quality from SD to 4K and 3D, source media like DVD, Blu-ray, and ISO, plus faceted genre, rating, tag, year, and audio and subtitle language pickers that only list values your library actually holds.
  • Libraries gained in-library search that matches sort names, so "Matrix, The" answers to "matrix", along with card titles and subtitles, an extra large image size, a three-way watched filter, and sort direction by re-picking the active sort.
  • New library settings ported from the other clients: Show Media Details, and Hide Backdrops while Browsing. Library pages now show a backdrop of the focused item that cross-fades like the home screen.
  • The games library was reworked into a grid of system tiles with cover previews and counts. Opening a system gives you a full screen with its own search and A to Z strip, which holds up on systems with thousands of ROMs.
  • My Media now shows every library, including box sets, books, music videos, home videos, and photos, which were hidden before.
  • Recently Released can surface new seasons or episodes, not just brand new series, which used to mean an ongoing show only appeared when it first premiered.
  • Added a Random sort option to libraries.

Spoiler-Free Viewing

  • Three new toggles let you hide descriptions on the home screen, hide descriptions and taglines on detail screens, and use series artwork instead of episode stills. Series and seasons keep their blurbs, since those don't spoil anything, and the artwork swap covers episode posters, the Next Up card, and chapter frames.

Playback

  • Separate subtitle styling for HDR content. White subtitles are painfully bright in HDR and dark grey is too dim in SDR, so HDR now gets its own size, color, position, opacity, shadow, and background settings behind a single toggle.
  • Configurable time labels on the progress bar, with six slots around it for elapsed time, total duration, time remaining, and a wall clock "Ends at" that follows your 12 or 24 hour setting.
  • Hold Play or Resume on the detail screen to open Advanced Playback and force a transcode at 1080p, 720p, or 480p, matching the mobile clients.
  • Track selection got a lot smarter. Your audio and subtitle language preferences are seeded from your Jellyfin account, subtitle picking respects the subtitle mode and prefers formats the player renders directly, SDH handling is properly separated, and commentary and audio description tracks are detected from more than one field. Picking a track by hand is remembered for the rest of the series, matched by what the track is rather than where it sat in the list, so it survives reordering.
  • Track pickers show a detail line with the codec, whether the track is internal or external, forced and SDH markers, channel count, and the language code, so tracks that all read as "Portuguese" are finally distinguishable.
  • Added a Clock Offset setting from -12 to +12 hours for TVs that report the wrong time, which shifts every clock in the app including the player's end time labels.

Theming

  • Themes actually apply on device now. The previous build was flattening every theme variable down to the default Moonfin colors on older TV engines, so non-default themes silently fell back. Themes now inject their real colors and per-theme fonts at runtime.
  • The navbar color picker became a palette of 14 named colors, and the media bar gained its own overlay color and opacity to match.

Features

Games

Play retro games on your TV. Moonfin now has a retro game library with its own detail pages and a built in game player with an on screen menu you can drive with the remote. Save states sync through the server, the app keeps the screen awake while you play, and backgrounding the app saves your game. Games need webOS 5 or Tizen 5 and newer, older sets get a clear message instead of a spinner. Box art now comes from your own server too. Check out the wiki for setup and details: https://github.com/Moonfin-Client/Plugin/wiki/Retro-Games

Home Screen

Since You Watched and Rewatch rows. Two new home rows built around what you have already finished. Since You Watched recommends titles based on your recent watches, and you can choose between a local recommender that scores your own library or online TMDB recommendations pulled through the plugin with a Seerr fallback. Rewatch surfaces things you have fully watched and might want to revisit, with its own filters and sorting.

A lot more home rows. This release adds Music Artists, Music Albums, Music Playlists, Continue Listening, Recordings, and Live TV rows, a Recently Released row sorted by actual release date, a Playlists row with sortable ordering, external home row lists backed by 13 TMDB charts, and IMDb list rows ported over from the core client. The Live TV row gives you quick channel access plus Guide and Recordings shortcuts. Seerr, TMDB, and calendar rows are now part of the home layout sync too, so your row setup carries across devices, and the Latest rows were renamed Recently Added so the two concepts don't get confused.

Faster home screen loading. The home screen now loads progressively, dismissing the spinner as soon as your first rows are ready and loading the rest in the background on a staggered schedule that goes easier on your server. All media server traffic now shares one request queue with a concurrency cap, so a cold boot no longer opens dozens of simultaneous connections that could lock up smaller servers.

Hidden items now sync. Hiding something from Continue Watching or Next Up on another Moonfin client now hides it on the TV too, and rewatching a hidden item brings it back like you would expect.

Better looking modern cards. Cards now show the poster with the landscape image only on expand, episodes default to the series poster, episode cards show the episode name next to its number, and missing images get a gradient and title placeholder. The focused card is now 16:9 so titles baked into the artwork no longer get cropped, expanded cards show real overviews, genres, runtime, and ratings instead of No description available, music gets square cards, My Media tiles expand like every other modern row, and coming back to a row returns focus to the card you were on.

Details and Search

A redesigned detail screen. Movie and show pages have a new modern layout that matches the other Moonfin clients, with a focusable tab bar and a setting to switch back to the classic style. Long descriptions collapse behind a Read More button you can expand and collapse from the remote, a new Details Background Opacity setting controls how dark the backdrop gets, and title logos are no longer color inverted, they get a drop shadow instead so colored logos stay intact.

Tabbed search results. Search results are now organized into tabs by type, so finding the right movie, show, or person is a lot less of a scroll. Your last ten searches are offered as quick chips, and game results show up too.

Change artwork from your couch. A new artwork selector lets you browse and set posters, backdrops, logos, and banners with the d-pad, with resolution and language filters and write permission checks so it only appears when your account can actually edit metadata. Admins also get an Identify option to match an item against remote providers.

Playback

Rebuilt Tizen playback. The Samsung AVPlay pipeline was overhauled top to bottom, with tuned buffering and adaptive startup, playback gated on buffer readiness, serialized seeking, proper suspend and restore with correct session reporting, fixed track selection timing and display scaling so the zoom and crop modes actually work, and a corrected device profile for HLS, Dolby Vision fallback, and dvd and dvb subtitles. Closing the TV now properly ends the session and Continue Watching refreshes when you come back. This closes out a whole cluster of Tizen playback issues in one go.

Cinema mode pre-rolls. With Cinema Mode on, pressing Play on a movie runs your server's configured intros first and rolls straight into the film. A failed intro never blocks the movie, and SyncPlay groups skip pre-rolls entirely.

The still watching prompt. After a configurable run of auto played episodes, playback pauses and asks if you're still there, so an unattended TV stops instead of working through a whole series. Only auto played episodes count, and picking the next episode yourself resets the counter.

A sleep timer. The player gained a 15 to 90 minute sleep timer that stops playback cleanly so your position is saved.

Redesigned skip and next up overlays. The skip button now has a draining countdown ring and covers every server marked segment type, and the Up Next card shows the episode thumbnail with a countdown ring in the play button, matching the other Moonfin clients. The related settings now sync too, including a new option to replace the skip outro button with Next Up.

Moonfin remembers your subtitle choice. Your subtitle selection now carries across plays and from episode to episode, so you don't have to pick the same track every time. Auto selected subtitles also follow your chosen language properly with the same track ranking the other clients use.

Live TV and DVR

Record from the guide. You can now schedule and cancel recordings right from the Live TV guide, and a program that is already scheduled shows Cancel instead of stacking up duplicate timers. Recordings gained a series timers tab, and you can add items to collections from the details page while you're at it.

Seerr

A full Seerr hub. The Seerr section now includes issues, collections, and your request quota. You can report issues and follow their comment threads from the TV, admins can approve or decline requests directly, requests show download progress, and loading requests or issues can be retried when something fails instead of leaving you stuck.

Music

A refreshed music experience. Music libraries open into a dedicated browse view with a hero header, chip navigation, and filters, and the music player was rebuilt with an ambient background pulled from the album art, a lyrics panel, and a queue panel, all matching the other Moonfin clients. Music items now use square cards.

Settings and Sync

Settings search. The settings screen now has a search field that finds any setting from a couple of characters and jumps focus straight to it.

Button customization. You can now reorder and hide the buttons on both the details page action row and the player controls, and your layouts sync through the plugin using the same keys as the other Moonfin clients so they follow you between devices.

Settings restore themselves on a fresh install. When you install Moonfin on a new TV and it detects the plugin, it now pulls your synced settings down automatically instead of starting you from scratch.

More settings actually sync. Rating labels, UI language, Live TV direct play, SyncPlay toggles, the clock, the still watching prompt, folder view, and the home row overlay now sync with the server, a batch of quick changes is pushed as one request, and the Classic or Modern home row style finally syncs correctly with the core client.

A Next Up day limit. Shows you haven't touched in a while now drop out of Next Up after a configurable number of days, which also keeps the query fast on large libraries.

Reorganized settings. Personalization and dynamic content settings have been reorganized to match the core client, so everything lives where you would expect it.

A diagnostics screen. A new live, filterable log viewer in settings traces server requests with timing when you need it, and can send a report straight to your server's client log endpoint, with tokens redacted.

Platform

Old webOS TVs can reach Let's Encrypt servers. Older webOS models reject Let's Encrypt certificates because their built in CA store is out of date. Moonfin now bundles a fallback service with an up to date certificate bundle and routes requests through it when needed, certificate errors show actionable guidance on the login screen, and there's a new opt in Allow Untrusted Certificates setting for setups that need it.

v2.6.0

@RadicalMuffinMan RadicalMuffinMan released this 19 Jun 18:13

Moonfin v2.6.0 Release Notes github

This is a big release. Moonfin now works with Emby servers as well as Jellyfin, adds a Theme Store, three new media bars, language selection, Seerr rows for your home screen, and a top to bottom performance pass. There is also a long list of playback and compatibility fixes for Tizen and webOS.

Important

The app has been submitted to LG and Samsung (for real this time) and is pending review, hopefully over the weekend it will come to the app stores. Stay up to date on Discord https://discord.gg/moonfin

Features

Emby server support. Moonfin is no longer Jellyfin only. You can now sign in to an Emby server through Emby Connect and browse, search, and play your library the same way you would on Jellyfin.

Theme Store. A new Theme Store lets you browse and install community themes right from Settings, each with its own description, on top of the existing built in and custom themes.

Note

To submit themes for the Moonfin community store, visit https://github.com/Moonfin-Client/Themes

Three new media bar styles. Alongside the existing Moonfin and MakD media bars, you can now choose from three more options under Settings > Dynamic Content > Media Bar & Local Previews > Bar Style:

  • Gallery: An expanding panel showcase where the focused title opens up to show its art and details, while the others stay tucked away as slim spines.
  • Banner: A clean, compact framed banner that sits above your rows instead of taking over the whole screen.
  • Bookshelf: Featured titles shown as books on a wooden shelf, with the focused one pulled out as a poster.

Pick your language. You can now choose the app language directly in Moonfin under Settings > Personalization > General Style > App Language, with English, German, Spanish, French, Hungarian, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), and Russian to choose from. There is also a brand new Hungarian translation.

Seerr rows on your home screen. You can now add any of the Seerr discover rows to your home screen, including Trending, Popular, Upcoming, My Requests, and Browse by Genre, Studio, or Network. These rows include request status badges and can be toggled individually under Settings > Personalization > Home Page. Since these rows can replace the need for the sidebar icon, there is also a new option under Settings > Personalization > Navigation to hide the Seerr button from the navbar.

A lot more rating sources. The additional ratings list under Settings > Integrations > Metadata & Ratings now covers every supported source instead of just four. You can mix and match IMDb, TMDB, Rotten Tomatoes Critics and Audience, Metacritic and Metacritic User, Trakt, Letterboxd, Roger Ebert, MyAnimeList, and AniList. Community rating can now be toggled on or off just like any other source.

Expanded home rows. A new toggle under Settings > Personalization > Home Page lets you show your home screen rows in a larger, more spread out layout when you want your library to feel less compact.

Moonfin now remembers your sort order. When you change how a library is sorted, that choice now sticks per library and carries over to the Genres view, so you do not have to set it again every time you come back.

A saved account picker at login. If you have autologin turned off, signing in now shows your saved accounts to pick from instead of making you type everything in again.

Redesigned Next Up card. The Next Up card has been reworked to match the other Jellyfin clients, with a cleaner look and a countdown-style toggle.

Restored the UI Scale setting. The UI Scale option that went missing in the settings rework is back under Settings > Personalization > General Style, so you can size the interface to your liking again.

Cleaner player controls. Player buttons that do not apply are now hidden, and there is a clear indicator when no subtitle is selected.

A top to bottom performance pass to make the app feel snappier, especially on older Tizen and webOS TVs:

  • Automatic performance tuning. The app now detects how powerful your TV is and reduces the most expensive visual effects on weaker hardware, while keeping things looking their best on newer sets. There is also a new Performance Mode setting under Settings > Personalization > General Style, with Auto, High Quality, Balanced, and Performance options.
  • Lighter visuals. Heavy background blur on dialogs and behind cards was the biggest slowdown on older TVs. It has now been reduced or disabled depending on your device, so menus and the home screen should feel much more responsive.
  • A smoother home screen. Returning to the home screen and updating watch progress no longer rebuild the entire row of cards, so browsing stays fluid even with lots of rows.
  • Faster, smoother scrolling. Rows and the Live TV guide should scroll with less jank, and the guide now only draws the channels you can actually see.
  • Better behavior on flaky networks. Requests now give up after 15 seconds instead of hanging for 30, and they cancel properly instead of lingering in the background.

Bug Fixes

  • Correct next episode order. Picking the next episode no longer relies on the Next Up API, so episodes always play in the right order.
  • Navbar and sidebar theming. Topbar and sidebar color and opacity now apply correctly and match the other Moonfin apps.
  • Themes with bad colors no longer break the UI. Invalid theme color overrides are now handled gracefully instead of leaving the interface in a broken state.
  • More of your settings sync across devices. Media bar options, detailed sub-headings, and other preferences now sync through the Moonfin server.
  • HEVC playback on 2018 and 2019 Samsung TVs. Tizen HEVC transcodes are now routed through MPEG-TS so those older sets can actually play them.
  • Fixed Live TV on 2020 Tizen and a black screen on webOS. A regression that broke Live TV on 2020 Samsung TVs and caused a black screen on webOS has been sorted out.
  • Better Tizen device detection and no more ghost sessions. Tizen device capabilities are reported more accurately, and powering off the TV no longer leaves a phantom playback session running on the server.
  • Smarter audio and subtitle track selection. Track selection now follows your own preferences and the server defaults instead of guessing, and when transcoding is needed the app will pick a playable alternate audio track first before falling back.
  • Albums play all the way through. Music playback no longer stops after the first track.
  • Cleaner PGS subtitles. PGS image subtitles are now rendered on the client so they no longer get burned into a transcode.
  • Better ASS subtitles. On webOS, ASS subtitles now render on their own canvas so they stay aligned when the picture is zoomed, and embedded fonts are pulled in so styled subtitles use the correct typeface.
  • Quieter Tizen Direct Play. AVPlay subtitles are now off by default during Tizen Direct Play so they do not double up with the client rendered ones.
  • Tidier player overlay on old firmware. The player OSD now uses margins instead of flexbox gap so it lays out correctly on Tizen 2.4 and webOS 3.
  • Audio passthrough now keeps up when you switch outputs. TrueHD and DTS-HD passthrough used to be locked in at launch. The audio path is now rechecked whenever it changes, so plugging into an eARC receiver mid-session works as expected. TrueHD passthrough is also now clearly labeled as experimental.
  • Fixed occasional silent playback caused by a reused video element staying muted.
  • Fixed featured bars loading their backdrop twice. Background art was being fetched a second time behind the bar, where it could not even be seen.
  • French now actually shows up. French was bundled but never registered as a build locale, so it quietly fell back to English. It is now wired up properly.
  • A more resilient Details screen. Loading a movie or show now handles partial data failures gracefully, so one slow or failed request no longer breaks the whole page.
  • Seerr sign-in no longer requires a password when your setup does not need one.
  • Watch progress is no longer lost on power-off. When you turn the TV off mid-show, the app now flushes your current position properly instead of recording a stop at the very beginning.
  • The screensaver stays out of the way. It no longer kicks in during active webOS playback, and home screen media bar trailers now stop when the screensaver appears.
  • Continue Watching keeps its details. Next Up items no longer lose their last played info when they get merged into Continue Watching.
  • Correct spacing with the topbar. The home screen now adds the right offset at the top when you are using the topbar layout, so nothing gets cut off.
  • Better sorting for non-Latin titles. Alphabetical filtering now uses the proper sort name, so titles in non-Latin scripts land in the right place.
  • Logos stay visible on dark backgrounds. Title logos that are almost entirely black now get inverted so you can actually see them.
  • Updated the Tizen "oblong" banner icon.

The KefinTweaks integration has also been removed since most rows are now native to Moonfin.
