Tips for Securing Your Facebook Account
1. Check your Privacy Settings
To access your privacy settings, click on the arrow icon in
the top right hand corner of Facebook. From there, you can
choose “Settings & Privacy.”
Next, click "Privacy Shortcuts"
Finally, choose "See more privacy settings" at the bottom of the
Privacy submenu. This will bring you to the first privacy panel.
Important things to fix include setting, “Who can see your
future posts?” to “Friends,” rather than “public.” You can
change the sharing permissions for individual posts, but it’s
better to default to a more private setting.
Another important step is to “Limit The Audience for Old
Posts on Your Timeline.” This will adjust all your old posts so
that they are shared with “Friends” rather than “Public.” This
is especially great if you’ve have the account for a long time,
and don’t want to scroll through years of posts looking for
anything inappropriate.
2. Review Your Timeline and Tagging
Preferences
Click “Profile and Tagging”
Do you allow other people to tag you in photos? Post to your
timeline? These are questions to consider carefully. While most
posts might be benign, you don’t want to be held accountable for
someone else’s insensitive comments or risque photos. Not to
mention, a wall full of spam is just annoying.
3. Public Posts
Click “Public Posts”
Again, these settings are important to consider. The MOST
important part of this panel is the link at the bottom, "View
your public timeline." This is a great way to make sure people
are seeing only what you want them to see.
4. Block as Needed
Click “Blocking”
Just because someone sends you a friend request, it doesn’t mean you have
to accept. If you feel like you need to accept the request, you can always add
them to the restricted list. You can also block people from seeing your profile
at all. And for that matter, you can block apps and app requests!
5. Stories
Click “Stories”
Consider carefully if you want to allow other people to share your stories.
6. Location
To get here, first click “settings” right above “Privacy” in the upper left
hand corner. Then choose “Account Settings, and then “Location.”
Keep your location to yourself :)
7. Check Your Logins
To get here, first click “settings” right above “Account Settings” in
the upper left hand corner. Then click on the "Security and Login"
link on the left.
Friends often think it’s hilarious to post funny pictures to a Facebook
account that’s been left logged in on their computer. But what happens
when someone else gets into your account? You can prevent this by
checking your security settings to see where you are logged in, and
remotely closing down active sessions.
8. Opt Out of Advertising Your Interests
Did you know that Facebook will use your image and interests in Facebook Ads unless you opt
out? This means that anything you’ve liked, commented on, posted about, etc. can be paired with
an advertisement for that product or company on your friends’ pages.
To get here, first click “settings” right above “Security & Login” in the upper left hand
corner. Then click on "Ad Preferences," and then "Ad Settings."
Go through each advertising setting to remove yourself from advertisers' lists, adjust the
categories Facebook has placed you in, and your social interactions.
