Spotlight on social justice
|
|
Social and economic wellbeing are key priorities for Europeans. That’s according to two recent surveys from the European Parliament, focusing on citizens’ priorities for the Parliament, and European Commission, focusing on Europeans' opinions about the EU budget. Over 40 % of respondents in both surveys believe the EU should prioritise actions that address the cost of living, employment, social affairs and public health.
As outlined in Article 3 of the Treaty on European Union, the Union’s aim is to promote peace, its values and the wellbeing of its peoples. The EU is determined to ensure economic and social progress for all. It supports and complements Member States’ actions to promote employment, strengthen working conditions and tackle inequalities and social exclusion.
The European Pillar of Social Rights sets out a list of 20 principles that guide the EU’s social policies. In line with those principles, the EU has implemented several actions that aim to ensure:
Recently, the European Commission has proposed initiatives that seek to strengthen Europeans’ social and economic wellbeing. These include a roadmap to create and maintain quality jobs, including by ensuring fairness and modernisation in workplaces and supporting workers and employers in the green, digital and demographic transitions. Increasing the supply of affordable, sustainable and quality housing across Europe is the objective of another proposal, which focuses on supporting innovation in the construction sector and mobilising public and private investment among others. A third strategy, aiming to secure a prosperous future for forthcoming generations across the EU, sets out a number of actions including developing an intergenerational fairness index to measure how well countries are protecting the future of younger and future generations.
Our April newsletter puts the spotlight on social justice.
