EP Resolution of 14 September 2017 on Modernisation of the trade pillar of the EU-Chile Association Agreement

The European Parliament adopted by 488 votes to 67, with 83 abstentions, a recommendation from the European Parliament to the Council, the Commission and the European External Action Service on the negotiations on the modernisation of the trade pillar of the EU-Chile Association Agreement.

The current association agreement, concluded in 2002, has been greatly beneficial to both parties since it entered into force in 2003, having doubled trade in goods and contributed to increasing trade in services and investment.

Parliament called on the EU and Chile to conclude a modern and ambitious trade agreement. This agreement should include a number of areas for fostering shared growth, equal opportunities, decent jobs and sustainable development, including the respect and promotion of labour and environmental standards and animal welfare and gender equality for the benefit of the citizens on both sides.

EP Resolution of 13 September 2017 on EU political relations with Latin America

The European Parliament adopted by 526 votes to 96, with 59 abstentions, a resolution on EU political relations between the EU and Latin America.

Members recalled that the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region is an ideal partner for the European Union to respond to the major challenges currently facing the world such as mass migration, terrorism, climate change and poverty.

Parliament suggested speeding up the ongoing negotiations updating the EU-Mexico Global Agreement finalising the updated EU-Chile Association Agreement before the first trimester of 2018.

The European Parliament adopted a resolution drafted by Jose Ignacio SALAFRANCA SANCHEZ-NEYRA (EPP-ED, Spain) and gave its assent to the conclusion of the EC-Chile Association Agreement.

The Association Agreeement was concluded between the European Community and its Member States of the one part, and the Republic of Chile, of the other part.
