Présentation

The Delegation for the relations with Afghanistan

The objective of the Delegation is to keep Afghanistan high on the political agenda and to support any efforts to preserve the achievements of the last 20 years, notably for women, girls and minorities, and in the field of education. The recent history of the Delegation for relations with Afghanistan (D-AF) was significantly impacted by the takeover by the Taliban in 2021. Prior to these events, and like for the other delegations of the European Parliament, one of the objectives of D-AF was to develop relations with the Afghan National Assembly.

Composition

The D-AF delegation has for the moment 7 full members and 2 substitute members.

In the 10th legislature, the Chair of the delegation is Ms Raquel GARCÍA HERMIDA-VAN DER WALLE (Netherlands, Renew Europe). The Chair is supported by 1st Vice-Chair, Mr Dirk GOTINK (EPP, Netherlands) and by 2nd Vice-Chair Ms Alessandra MORETTI (S&D, Italy).

Working methods

The Delegation holds regular meetings in Brussels or Strasbourg to examine matters concerning the current political, security, economic and social situation in Afghanistan.

The Delegation closely collaborates with other Parliament bodies, such as the Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET), the Subcommittee on Security and Defence (SEDE), the Subcommittee on Human Rights (DROI), the Committee on Development (DEVE) and the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality (FEMM), which have held discussions on different aspects of the situation in Afghanistan in recent years.

The Delegation also works with the European External Action Service (EEAS) and relevant services of the Commission. Moreover, the Delegation regularly engages with experts and representatives of civil society organisations, including Afghan organisations operating in exile.
