Celebrating 30 Years of the Nordic Library at Athens
A Landmark Anniversary for a Hub of Research and Collaboration for Nordic Institutes and Beyond
Main content
The Nordic Library at Athens, an internationally recognized resource for research and scholarship, marks its 30th anniversary this year. We are pleased to invite you to the jubilee celebrations, which will take place on 4–5 December 2025.
Established through the collaboration of the Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, and Swedish Institutes in Athens, the Nordic Library opened its doors on 20 October 1995, made possible through the generous support of the Nordic Council.
The inauguration was attended by the then Ministers of Education George A. Papandreou (Greece), Gudmund Hernes (Norway), Ole Vig Jensen (Denmark), Olli-Pekka Heinonen (Finland), and the Deputy Secretary of State Carl Lindberg (Sweden), reflecting the strong commitment to Nordic–Greek academic cooperation.
Three decades later, the Library stands as an invaluable meeting place for scholars and a cornerstone of Nordic collaboration in Greece. This jubilee offers an opportunity to celebrate its achievements, highlight its continued significance for the academic community, and present a shared vision for future research cooperation, both within the Nordic framework and beyond.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, a ceremony at the Nordic Library at Athens, followed by an exhibition, will take place on 4 December 2025. This will be followed by a Colloquium on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Nordic Library at Athens, held on 5 December 2025 at the Danish Institute at Athens, titled “The Future of Research Libraries in a Digital World.”
Please find the colloquium program below.
