Summary

Resume-writing services offer professional help to job seekers by crafting resumes that highlight skills and experience, aiming to improve your chances of landing interviews. Choosing the right provider involves more than just finding someone who can write well; it’s about finding a partner who truly understands hiring practices and your industry.

  • Research credentials: Take time to learn about a writer’s recruiting or hiring background, and look for positive reviews or sample work before committing.
  • Clarify the process: Ask specific questions about what the service includes, how revisions are handled, and whether you’ll have direct communication during the process.
  • Check for fit: Make sure the service is familiar with your field or career goals and be cautious of anyone who promises guaranteed results, unusually low prices, or lacks transparency.

You can't shake a stick here on LinkedIn without bashing it into at least twelve people selling resume writing services. Sure, some of them are scammers — ignore them. But what if you actually 𝘢𝘳𝘦 in the market for a resume writer? How do you decide who can help you vs. who's going to take your money and run? 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞'𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐟𝐨𝐫: ⤵ ✔ 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐫𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞: You want someone who not only knows how to write, but understands the audience for whom they're writing. A recruiter has seen countless resumes, screened thousands of candidates, and likely pored over resumes with hundreds of hiring managers. You'll benefit from this expertise. ✔ 𝐇𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐲: Avoid resume writers who promise a way to "get past the ATS" or "beat the bots." If that's their sales pitch, chances are high they've never actually seen the inside of an ATS or worked as a recruiter. And chances are even higher that they're going to say whatever they can to make a buck. Be wary of anyone who claims to 𝘨𝘶𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘦 a specific result; a resume is only a small part of the overall job search process. ✔ 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩: A good resume writer should be willing to work with you, not just for you. Whether that's speaking live to gather details of your experience, going back and forth on final updates and edits, or just being available to answer questions, you want someone who is there to partner with you. ✔ 𝐄𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞: As with any service provider, you want to hear about others' experiences. Look for positive testimonials or reviews. You should also be able to look at samples of the writer's work if you ask. If you can't find any of these things or any other evidence of this person's experience (a website, portfolio, LinkedIn profile), be wary. ✔ 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞: Experience recruiting for or working in your industry isn't a requirement, but it can be helpful, especially for very specialized industries. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬𝐧'𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫?  🚫 Certifications or association memberships 🚫 Location, as long as they're familiar with the professional and cultural norms in your country 🚫 Cost: Okay, hear me out. Of course price 𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴, but it doesn't necessarily 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘯 anything about the writer's skills. That is to say, a resume writer isn't better or worse because they charge $500 and someone else charges $1000. If you're in the market for a new resume, I'd love to chat about how I can help. What About Free Resume Services Like TAP & SERCO? TAP & SERCO offer a good foundation; they aren’t designed for senior enlisted officers or executives. 10 questions to ask a résumé writer If you are considering hiring a professional résumé writer, you might be asking for referrals, reading profiles, and asking about cost. Hiring a professional is a huge decision, whether you are not getting interviews or are in the early stages of planning your next career move. You need to do your research. 🔍 At some point, the professional résumé writer might invite you for a consultation call. You might be concerned about the writer trying to sell you something or being aggressive. This is far from the truth! A consultation call is an opportunity to learn more about the service, to build a relationship, and to determine fit. Here are ten questions to ask: 📌 What does your service include? Every résumé writer offers different features in the service. Some write résumés. Other writers include a cover letter and a mock interview. 📌 What training or certifications do you have? You don’t need a certification to write a good résumé. There are recruiters, career services professionals, and hiring managers who read thousands of résumés every year. However, a certification in the industry shows that the writer has completed rigorous training. 📌 How do you stay current in the industry? Ideally, a professional résumé writer should attend conferences and workshops. 📌 What is your process? What can I expect? Every writer has a different process. They approach the work in unique ways. 📌When can I expect the first draft? Timelines vary. Does the writer share the first draft in three days? Or, does the writer share it in 10 days? Does the writer work on weekends? How many days do you have to request revisions? 📌 What materials do you need before starting the order? Will the writer need a copy of your current résumé? Or, will the writer meet with you to get the details? 📌 How many revisions do you do? This is important because some résumé writers do one or two revisions before completing the order. Others will work on the revisions until they provide the best work possible. 📌Can you show me some samples of your work? It is your right to see some samples. Ask the person to meet with you and show you the samples. 📌Can you share testimonials from former clients? I know wonderful résumé writers who don’t have a lot of testimonials. They are busy getting the work done or are too shy to ask for testimonials. If the writer has testimonials, read them and identify patterns. 📌How much does your service cost? This should be the last question you ask. Why? Because the price doesn’t mean anything if you don’t understand what the service includes and what it can do for you. By the way, these questions apply to career and interview coaches. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. What else can you ask? 🔔 Follow me and learn how to advance your career.

Think Jerry Maguire for Job Seekers, Job Search Strategist, Job Coach

This isn't a popular take. But it is the truth. Writing your resume is hard. It's tough for almost everyone. Because it is about yourself, it is the same reason very successful executives have difficulty interviewing while looking for a job. Finding a resume template online may seem like a great idea, but it isn't. A resume is the key to opening doors. I see terrible resumes daily from people with really great backgrounds. Drop the colors. Stop with the fancy formats, please. Stop writing your job description. I see that happen constantly, and it makes your resume worthless. Go back 10-15 years. Yes, That's it. All the online banter about paying a professional being a waste of money is just noise from people who are fed up and angry about their job search. I get it, but it is bad advice. Your resume is one of the most critical aspects of your job search. When you choose a resume writer, make sure the writer is qualified to write your resume. Ask them if they are sending your resume offshore to someone else to write your resume. A very well-known resume writer on Linkedin does just that, and it is messed up. She pays pennies but charges well over a thousand dollars. Ensure the resume writer didn't just throw up a shingle because they are out of work and now write resumes in this market—experience matters. And no, I am not hawking my services because that’s not my business. I write resumes for my clients only. I can give you some names if you want a referral to someone. Your resume is your ticket into companies! Your resume matters.

If you're going to use a career coach / resume writer, please use one who actually has experience in recruiting / TA / hiring / HR, or at least has been doing it a long time. I have nothing against these services, in a general sense. ✴ Some wildly overcharge people which I think is pretty crappy given that they're preying on someone who may be desperate. ✴ Some employ people as coaches who literally have zero experience in anything related to hiring. ✴ Some are individuals who have little to no actual experience in a related field. My best advice? Do your homework. Get referrals and recommendations that are NOT on a social media platform. Look up the work history of the person / people who are doing the career coaching and ask yourself why they might be qualified to give this kind of advice. Google the company / individual name and see if there are any scam alerts. Just don't shell out hundreds or thousands of dollars on the first call. Do some research and sleep on it. They'll be there to take your money tomorrow or the next day. #careercoach #careercoaching #resumewriting #resumewriter #resumewriters #resumewritingservices

As a recruiter, people will often ask me to help them to write their resume. While I do tend to spend a large chunk of my time reviewing applicant resumes, I am not an expert on resume writing. Resume writing is an entirely different skillset. While some recruiters are also professional resume writers, I personally am not. When I was job seeking, I hired a professional resume writer to create an appealing resume and cover letter which I've kept updated and used for many years. Professional resume writers: ✅ Create tailored resumes ✅ Perfect writing, formatting, and tone ✅ Showcase your accomplishments ✅ Provide structure and organization ✅ Optimize keywords ✅ Proofread and edit And some will even provide LinkedIn profile optimization and offer resume updates to keep up with the latest trends in hiring. All of this is to say that while I can help a little and possibly offer some advice, I HIGHLY recommend hiring a professional resume writer to help you stand out in this competitive job market. If you are a professional resume writer or know of any who you would like to recommend, please feel free to tag them or recommend your own services in the comments below! 👇 #jobseekers #hiring #recruiting #resumewriting #resumetips #jobseekingtips #professionalresumewriter #jobhunting #networking
