𝐑𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐊𝐞𝐧𝐲𝐚'𝐬 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐢𝐫𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐲 Sustainability creates the greatest impact when it delivers value beyond the business. At Kenya Breweries Limited (KBL), our journey towards a circular economy starts with the people and communities within our value chain, from the over 40,000 farmers who grow our barley and sorghum, to the partners helping us protect water catchments, improve resource efficiency and recover packaging after use. For me, this is what responsible growth looks like, building resilient supply chains, supporting livelihoods and ensuring that the resources we depend on today are protected for tomorrow. Circularity is a business imperative and a shared responsibility. I share more on how businesses can help drive Kenya’s sustainable future in my latest article in the Sunday Standard.

As I reflect on the successful conclusion of CONVERGE 2026, I am encouraged by the strong commitment demonstrated by participants from across the packaging value chain. Over three days, the forum reinforced a clear message: packaging remains an essential solution for protecting products, reducing food loss and waste, supporting trade, and strengthening food security. Our challenge is not to reduce its role, but to continuously improve how it is designed, used and recovered. The discussions highlighted that sustainable packaging requires a combination of innovation, effective policy frameworks, and collaboration. From advancements in packaging materials and recycling systems to digital solutions, AI, EPR schemes and evolving regulations, participants explored practical pathways towards more circular and resilient packaging systems. A particularly important takeaway was the recognition that developing countries are not only beneficiaries of solutions, but key contributors to innovation and circular economy approaches. Equally, the forum underscored that no single stakeholder can drive this transition alone. Strong partnerships across governments, industry, academia and international organizations will be essential to scale impact. For UNIDO, CONVERGE 2026 reaffirmed the importance of promoting packaging systems that are sustainable, inclusive and supportive of broader circular economy and food systems objectives. The real success of this forum will be measured by the actions and partnerships that emerge from it. I am optimistic that, together, we can translate these discussions into concrete solutions that benefit people, the planet and economies alike.
