Dynamic Model of Chartists vs. Fundamentalists In The Creation Of Commodity Bubbles

The price of crude oil has experienced a parabolic rise, doubling from 2007 to as high as $130 a barrel in May of 2008. Similar price increases have also been observed in other commodities such as gold. The implication of such drastic price increases begs an explanation, and many identify such behavior under the cloak of a bubble. A cusp catastrophe model has been used to show the dynamics of chartists and fundamentalists in the creation of commodity bubbles. Analysis of this models shows…

Analysis of this models shows that a bubble exists in the commodity markets, and also highlights on what can be done to avoid them in the first place.
