EURO 2012 Czyli Pociąg Zaprzężony W Charty / UEFA EURO 2012 Or A Train Pulled By Greyhounds
Forbes
See publicationIn this article, I opposed the very popular at the time over-optimistic hype on the economic benefits generated allegedly by big sport events. I departed from Phillip Porter research in the USA regarding Super Bowl economic impact and went through Baade and Mathson results to advocate that the UEFA EURO 2012 in Poland will most likely net no significant economic impact or it would even be slightly negative in total.

METROPOLAND concept for the Polish pavilion at EXPO 2010 in Shanghai
The Challenge: EXPO 2010 in Shanghai was set to focus on the city as the main theme of national exhibitions. It was best demonstrated by the official tagline of EXPO 2010: “Better city, better life.” The problem of my native Poland was it had no globally recognizable achievements in city developments and the regular promotion of Poland based on Chopin, vodka and pristine nature did not match well the EXPO 2010 main topic. Following this inconsistency, Poland’s two government agencies: Polish Agency for Enterprise (PARP) Development and Polish Agency for Information and Investment (PAIIZ) announced call for concepts of Poland’s presence at the EXPO 2010 in Shanghai.
The Solution: Our project backed on the notion that Poland is not known at all through its cities so in order to change it one must act radically. We proposed a provocative action of setting the Polish pavilion at EXPO 2010 under the name of METROPOLAND (METROPOLISH STATE, METROPOLONIA, METROPOLOGNE, METROPOLEN), a fictionary new state made of Polish cities and capitalizing on the similarity of words: METROPOLIS – METRO POLISH, etc. We intended to stage it provocatively with an orchestrated passport controls and stamps issues by METROPOLAND to the visitors to suggest that Poland changed completely from nature idylle peasansts society to a conglomerate of dynamic cities. The exhibition itself was supposed to present a hybrid metropolis of METROPOLAND bringing best parts of the main Polish metropolises together. The Benefits: The METROPOLAND concept was bought by the PARP/PAIIZ government agencies but eventually it was considered too bold to make Poland’s official appearance at the exhibition. Our expertise on global city network and the location of Poland’s cities made substantial part of the official general concept of the EXPO 2010. Even in the form of a loose think-tank, we stood out as the main source of knowledge on the world city network and its consequences for Poland’s economy.

Working with the international team I and Jason Potts developed the program and the speaker list for the Conference at the World Cities Expo 2017 - the global scale event organized by the Metropolitan Municipality of Istanbul. The expo and the conference drew massive crowds and the speakers I invited and was honored to work with such as Jenn Beard of Mozilla, prof. Roberto Cervero of Berkeley, prof. Solomon Darwin of Berkeley, Scott Turnbull of US Ignite, David Gilford of Intersection, Carlos Moreno of Paris, Lillian Pierson of DataMania, Karen Scott of The White House or Antoni Vives of Barcelona delivered fantastic performances that helped this conference become a grat success. The MedyaCity team of the leader Sensin Genc supported by Merve Mucak and Tugce Tackin did totally impossible job. Its organization was exemplary even against the world's highest standards.
It turned out one of the best event of the past 12 months in the world.
What is very hard to believe is that it was organized in just about 3 months.Other creatorsSee project -

The Challenge: Many independent reports demonstrated that companies need to use predictive analytics in the field where taking wrong decisions costs most – in human resources. The everlasting problem of predicting how good employee the candidate will make was never sufficiently solved by theoretical models. Qualaboris Institute (Qi) engaged in co-operation with renowned psychologists like prof. James C. Kaufman, president-elect Division X American Psychological Association or prof. Christopher C. Henrich of GSU, Atlanta in order to empirically examine which measurable individual qualities (belonging to intelligence, personality or creativity domains) correlate with success in which jobs in the real life business. The Solution: We proposed over 60 psychometric variables belonging to various domains (inelligence, personality, creativity, biometry) and designed the Qi Competence Radar. We ran multiple regressions to find the most important psychometric and non-psychometric correlates of professional profile and job success (external measures). The results enabled us to build competency models (area-specific) for professionals divided into various functional areas (like marketing, accounting, sales, etc). Because of the very robust and domain-specific data (N=4818, over 100 variables in total) the models demonstrate relatively high goodness (coefficient of determination range: 0.3-0.6) The Benefits: The results of the Qi Competence Radar paved way to manBase system, world’s first on-line platform for competency-based volume recruitment. The total testing time was reduced from over 130 minutes to 58 minutes and the accuracy of predictions improved. The research itself remains one of the largest and deepest endeavor of its kind in the world to date. The publication of results in a top-tier scientific journals is in preparation.

VERBOTRONIC Research for the World’s First Computer-aided Brand Name Design

The Challenge: New brands are rising exponentially. Only new domains grow at about 10 000 000 a year which is way more that ALL THE WORDS in the TOP TEN INETERNET languages. There is a striking and widening gap between the demand for new original brand names and the supply of new words in the language. Global competition of everyone against everyone and internet as the global and democratic clash of all again all (everyone can take your dream domain 5 seconds before you) makes it even tougher. But the most important fact is that, unlike graphic design or sound design (composition), the world has never developed ANY systemic methodology of enhancing design of new words that would be both well-grounded in theory of language, empirically reliable and practically useful. VERBOTRONIC Project is an ambitious try to address these issues and breakthrough methodology of brand name valuation and develop a pioneer software for naming. It combines linguistic research, marketing theory and IT development. The Solution: I have conceptualized the project and designed the research with help of Karol Fekner (innovative investor with good command over quantitative models) and Tomasz Kuczmarski (linguist of UAM) who ran the statistical analysis. It resulted in a breakthrough quantitative modelling of hundreds of word structure characteristics. We formulated several hypotheses of rules underlying popularity of and survival rate of word structures in the language (research on English and Polish completed) using both dictionaries and large digitalized language corpora.. The Benefits: It is probably the largest set of quantitatively defined linguistic features determining potential “goodness” of a new word achieved to date. It paves ground for system development that is set to revolutionize brand naming in the internet era.

The strategic decisions involved many company-specific risk factors going beyond the regular market analytics. The Solution: I used the IMS Health basic data on SKU level (over 100 000 records) and data from other sources to create PHARMASCOPE or a quantitative model for company-specific market attractiveness valuation comprising external and internal success and risk factors. It allowed mapping of all pharma markets into three-dimensional matrices and included individual trend projections for each market individually. The Benefits: PHARMASCOPE provided insightful yet comprehensible analysis of all 1100+ pharma markets on level IMS CHC4 (most detailed product groups considered ‘market’), 3-stage ranking and final quantitative selection of the top 24 markets for in-depth analysis. It was the major basis for new product development plans.

The Solution: I combined marketing edge with the knowledge of principles of Evidence-based Medicine (EBM). I used secondary sources and conducted several primary market surveys to thoroughly examine over 30 product markets corresponding with: varicose and venal circulation problems, cardiovascular diseases, male infertility, menopause, hormonal therapy complications, gynecological conditions, neurosis and depression, liver and gastrointestinal tract conditions. The Benefits: All 17 new products designed on basis of these analyses featured an evidence-based competitive advantage in formulation against the market status quo.

Yet there were no reports available comprehensively measuring the city power. No single economic variable from national statistics seemed to explain the situation either. NORDEA Bank, part of the largest financial group of Northern Europe, and METROPOLIA Magazine commissioned us to find new ways of measuring and demonstrating the power and hierarchy of Polish cities. The Solution: Working in co-operation with my fellow researchers of IKER and Konsorcjum Metropolia Poznan think-tank, I designed the research scheme and valuation model of an ultimate index of city ability to achieve socioeconomic excellence. It was named Metropolis Power Index or METROX and comprised of three sub-indices for economic power, scale and quality of life and business network connectivity. The Benefits: The resulting NORDEA METROX.PL reports (editions 2008, 2009, 2010, 2013 in preparation) provided business decision makers and public players with sound basis on the development dynamics of Polish cities in the way never presented before as we focused on the processing power and not the acquired position. The METROX methodology as acclaimed by the most prominent scientists in the field: prof. Gorzelak, Director of EUROREG Center and prof. Jalowiecki, Chair of the UNESCO Sustainable Development at University of Warsaw.

There was still much of a uncertainty of how to classify and compare various data on creative economy by national statistics. One of the first developments in this regard was new framework for culture and creative industries proposed for UNESCO official manual. The Creative Economy Program the United Nations in Geneva organized high panel for experts to analyze and discuss the options. I was among the other exeprts during this session, we have not reached a satisfactory consensus yet. The Solution: Following the UN summit in Geneva, I have designed and proposed Creative-12 or the revised version of the UNESCO Framework based on the nested model of creative industries of which design sector was made the central and dominant one. The Benefits: It brought more attention to the design industry and the very mechanism of value creation through design which helped UNESCO and UNCTAD government partners understand the design impact on their economies. In UNCTAD’s new 2010 Creative Economy report the design setor alone accounted for roughtly half of the total world exports of creative goods.

The Challenge: Frequent public debate on place marketing and numerous commercial assignments prompted me to review the existing methods of brand valuation in the course of my Ph.D. dissertation. No single methodology was found capable of capturing the difference between commercial brands and place brands and provide sound quantitative basis for a complex valuation. The Solution: Departing form the concepts of prof. Roger Sinclair of Wittwatersrand University and the methodological failure of Simon Anholt’s hexagon, I proposed six-dimensional functional brand valuation model. It describes a brand as benefit generator and covers the major financial (investments, tourism, exports) and socio-economic (migrations, public diplomacy, social integrity) types of benefit flows. I elaborated on the model and valuation method in my Ph.D. work, while the basics were presented during the 14th ACEI International Conference in Vienna, 2006. The Benefits: The model has been in use ever since in several brand valuation and brand development projects for regions (Wielkopolska, Warmia and Mazury). It has also made base of the Interbrand award winning (2010, 2011) branding strategy of the City of Poznan, Poland’s second city economy.

It sparkled strong reactions and controversies. I was hired to lead the team responsible for defining completely new visitor-oriented concepts of museum’s activities and to introduce cultural economics into the museum management. The Solution: The works started with a global benchmarking study on best practices of modern arts museums comprising over 30 top musueums of the world. I paid personal visits major museums in Europe and Americas. At the same time, working with Poland’s top art curators like Anda Rottenberg, I defined museum’s Mission and added the modern cultural economics perspective. The resulting strategic guidelines for the Warsaw Museum of Modern Arts my team produced incorporated best practices from the entire world with educational mission and user (visitor) value maximization. It was approved as museum’s basis for future operations (opening in 2014) The Benefits: The project provided first guidelines for the modern arts museum strategic management in Poland well founded in world’s best practices and most current models of cultural economics.

The Challenge: BASF, The Chemical Company, present in over 80 countries of the world, faced a very specific situation in Asia Pacific in the late 1990’s. On one hand, this region surged as one of the most dynamic global revenue generator, on the other hand – there were many issues unsolved between the countries of the region. The major question was which national market should be supplied form which regional production site and at what transfer price. The Solution: Following several months of my hands-on co-ordination of regional exports and imports from the central place in Singapore (textile chemicals business unit), the company okayed this direction and introduced a general command and control center (with limited physical stock capacity) in Singapore named Asia Pacific Trading Centre (APTC). I was responsible for textile chemicals in the respective task force because I started the co-ordination processes and I had already good relations with the national companies (frequent visits to China, India, Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia). The APTC assumed processing and control over all international purchase and sales orders between the 15 countries: Australia, Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. The Benefits: The APTC concept substantially streamlined the operations in the regions, which reduced distribution costs while retaining flexibility of the national companies. At the same time, the central co-ordination of the network of orders between the 15 countries helped prevent the intra-company undesired competition between the companies and brought stability into the region disturbed by the 1997 financial crisis.

I was hired to the Spanish team as I was the only person capable of translating software directly from German to Spanish. My team comprised of one Spanish and two Peruvian nationals.
Because of my command of the majority of languages involved, I was later assigned to co-develop and manage the multi-lingual online dictionary (6 European languages).
RESPONSIBILITIES:
➢ To develop the Spanish language version of the systems,
➢ To coordinate the team of translators,
ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
➢ I significantly accelerated making of the Spanish version of the system because - unlike other team members - I did not have to use the interim translations from German to English
➢ I co-created and managed large parts of the internal network based multidicionary of all languages in action (Spanish, French, Italian, English, German and Polish) as I had communicative command over all these languages and could operate on each pair of them directly. (NOTE it was back in 1997 when there was no Google translate even distantly imaginable)
