🌍 Climate Technology at COP30: From Priorities to Real Implementation As #climateaction enters a decisive decade, countries are increasingly turning to Technology Needs Assessments (#TNAs) to identify the right #ClimateTech—and the right enabling conditions—to deliver on their national climate goals. At a #COP30 side event co-organized by the COP30 Brazil Presidency, UN Climate Change #UNFCCC, and UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre, government representatives, climate funds, and technical experts highlighted how TNAs are evolving from planning tools into catalysts for implementation. 🔹 More than 100 countries have now undertaken TNAs 🔹 TNAs and Technology Action Plans are informing Green Climate Fund and Global Environment Facility investments 🔹 Countries are integrating climate priorities with industrial policy, digital tools, and whole-of-society approaches 🔹 New UNFCCC guidance will further support countries in updating and strengthening their assessments The message from the event was clear: credible climate action begins with identifying the technologies that can deliver impact—and ensuring countries have the ownership and capacity to deploy them. 🎬 DOCUNIGHT IN UN City Copenhagen 🎬 ⚠️ Disasters, climate change, and environmental degradation are reshaping #migration patterns across Africa and beyond. Communities across Africa are adapting in place and forging new solutions despite immense challenges. For some, migration is also an adaptation strategy. Without urgent #climateaction, Sub-Saharan Africa could see as many as 86 million internal climate #migrants by 2050. Developing countries need $310–365 billion per year by 2035, but current flows are only $26 billion. Closing the #adaptationgap is how we protect lives, deliver #climatejustice, and build a safer, more sustainable world. 🌱 Join us on 16 December for a #docUNight screening of the award-winning documentary #ThankYouForTheRain in which Kisilu, a Kenyan farmer, captures the daily realities of #climatechange on camera and his journey from a father to community leader to global activist at COP21 in Paris. 💬 Visit UN City Copenhagen on 16 December and hear the reflections of Kisilu himself, as well as filmmaker Julia Dahr, youth ambassador on Migration, the Environment, and Climate Change Rose Kobusinge, IOM Denmark's Giorgia Rega, and Henry Neufeldt (UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre) on progress since the #ParisAgreement and what this year's climate conference #COP30 in Belém means for the #climate and #migration. ✅ Save your free spot to join us on 16 December at 17:30–19:45: https://lnkd.in/dSFcvSf6 🖼️ Visit UN City this docUNight and take the opportunity to explore a #PhotoExhibition featuring communities in Mauritania and how droughts, sudden floods, and environmental degradation impact the decision of people to migrate – or to adapt in place – as traditional livelihoods become harder to sustain.

Strengthening urban action: Climate solutions at UNEA-7 Cities and Regions Summit Last week, UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre participated in the #UNEA7 Cities and Regions Summit, an important gathering of mayors, regional leaders and urban sustainability experts under the theme “Global Ambition, Local Action.” At the Urban Action Corner, we showcased our growing portfolio of #urban #climateaction initiatives, including new work on financing and implementing urban #NatureBasedSolutions (#NbS), #EnergyEfficiency, urban #lossAndDamage, and integrated planning approaches for fast-growing #cities. We will also contribute to the City Cluster Meeting, to share insights on creating enabling environments for urban NbS—from robust governance frameworks to innovative business models and financing mechanisms that empower cities to plan, invest and scale nature-positive infrastructure. Our recent publications formed the basis of these discussions and remain valuable resources: 📕 Business Models for Financing Nature-Based Solutions in Urban Climate Action https://lnkd.in/dZsGaJaB 📕 Enabling Future-Ready Urbanization in Fast-Growing Cities with Nature-based Solutions https://lnkd.in/dsWEgncR 📕 Towards Implementing Urban Nature-based Solutions in Zambia and Mauritius https://lnkd.in/d2cTveqQ 📕 As UNEA-7 continues, We are happy to contribute to key events this week: 📌 High-Integrity Carbon Markets: Impact and Path to Accelerated Climate Action 9 December, 09:00–12:00 EAT Livestream: https://lnkd.in/dBT77vSY 📌 Data for a Changing Planet: Transparency as a Means for Accountability and Decision-Making in the Digital Age 10 December, 10:00–11:30 EAT Livestream: https://lnkd.in/dm9M8TfT

We know the impacts of climate change are accelerating. And we also know that the solutions will be local – with cities and regions at the heart of action. An estimated 60% of the targets of the Sustainable Development Goals and 70% of climate solutions hinge on local action. Cities are already becoming mitigation, adaptation and resilience hubs through low-carbon buildings; through natural cooling infrastructure and heat-resilient design; through food-resilient planning and stormwater systems; through freshwater protection and urban nature restoration. Today, at the Cities and Regions Summit here in Nairobi, taking place just ahead of the seventh session of the United Nations Environment Assembly - #UNEA7 - I shared three ways in which we can build on this momentum to start delivering real progress at city and regional level and ensure we provide affordable, sustainable and climate-resilient housing for all. 1️⃣ We must lean on nature: Nature-based Solutions (NbS) are particularly cost-effective across all aspects of environmental crises. When cities integrate natural systems into the built environment they can lower temperatures by up to 4°C, reduce energy costs by up to 30 per cent, filter pollutants to improve air quality, and shield communities from floods and storm surges. 2️⃣ We must shift financing to nature-positive, climate-resilient urban development: Cities generate over 80 per cent of global GDP. And cities like Paris and Johannesburg are already using green bonds to unlock private capital for climate-smart infrastructure. However, unlocking the full potential of financing for local action requires some fundamental shifts. 3️⃣ We must boost multi-level governance to make Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) work on the ground: MEAs are increasingly citing cities and regions as key actors – as we saw in the Belém Policy Package at #COP30 and in the Global Biodiversity Framework target 12, which calls for enhancing green spaces and urban planning for human well-being and biodiversity. UNEP supports this in many ways and will continue to do so. What happens in cities shapes the world. What happens in this Summit will help shape what happens in cities and in the halls of national governments. And why we at UN Environment Programme are providing this space so that the voices of cities and sub-national entities carry into #UNEA7. More in my speech: https://lnkd.in/dYFcDKBx
