Privacy and freedom online
About us
The Tor Project is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. We develop free and open source software for privacy and freedom online, protecting people from tracking, surveillance, and censorship. The Tor Project’s mission is to advance human rights and freedoms by creating and deploying free and open source anonymity and privacy technologies, support their unrestricted availability and use, and further their scientific and popular understanding. Tor protects you by bouncing your communications around a distributed network of relays run by volunteers worldwide: it prevents somebody watching your internet connection from learning what sites you visit and it prevents the sites you visit from learning your physical location. Tor works with many of your existing applications, including web browsers, instant messaging clients, remote login, and other applications based on the TCP protocol. The easiest way to use Tor is in Tor Browser, which adds additional privacy protections to your browsing experience. Tor Browser protects against cross-site tracking with first-party isolation and browser fingerprinting. Using Tor can also help you access an open web if you're in a part of the world or on a network where sites are blocked.

We’re excited for Funding the Commons: Buenos Aires on November 19. 🌐 💻 Tor's very own Roger Dingledine will speak at the summit that brings together builders, funders, and researchers to advance public goods funding and design real-world finance infrastructure. At the Tor Project, along with our incredible community of supporters, we're not just imagining a free internet — we're building it! 🧅🌐 - In Turkmenistan, Turkmen.news trusts Tor to provide safe access to the free internet where it once did not exist. - Freedom of the Press Foundation uses Tor as the backbone of SecureDrop, enabling secure communications between journalists and sources. - In Russia and Egypt, individuals use the Tor Browser to access encrypted email services like Tuta | Secure Email & Calendar to freely communicate. As a 501(c)3 nonprofit, the Tor Project relies on donations to power its tools -– the Tor network, Tor Browser, Tails OS, and the Tor ecosystem. These tools are trusted by millions and always free to use, without collecting, selling, trading, or renting any of your data for profit. During the next three months, we will be hosting a fundraising campaign and are asking for your donations to power a free internet for millions across the globe. Every donation will be matched by our supporter, Power Up Privacy. This means a $25 donation will have a $50 impact. https://lnkd.in/drTj4Z3z

“Think about privacy not as a feature but as a design choice." Sometimes, the places users trust most can become the most dangerous. 🫖 The Tea breach isn’t just about one app. It’s a symptom of a much larger issue: the internet as a centralized, for-profit, tracking machine. We urgently need solutions that are secure- and private-by-design—built on transparency, open technology, and user control. Thanks Tech Policy Press and Dr. Laura Scherling, EdD for the interview! 👉 https://lnkd.in/gxypXCi5

Remember the onion plushie? Its maker Æ Labs has partnered with Tor to create a digital representation of one of our shirts. 👇🧅💜
We partnered with The Tor Project to create a digital representation of one of their shirts. We want to support organizations and brands that align with the webPunk aesthetic. You can equip it from the edit_avatar page. Once the marketplace is live on Æ, all proceeds will go directly to Tor — supporting their mission to advance human rights and freedom online. Who should we collaborate with next? ↓
