When you sit down with the people of Mannar, climate change stops being statistics, it becomes a deeply personal story. It’s in the voices of fishermen who are the main breadwinners for their homes, unable to cast their nets due to fierce winds and warming seas. It’s in the words of a local youth watching the beaches of his childhood vanish into the water. And it’s in the daily struggle of women holding families together under relentless, stress-inducing heat waves. These communities didn't cause climate breakdown, yet they are paying the highest price. Support Mannar’s journey to climate justice. South Asia doesn't need to start from scratch. It just needs to adapt what already works. From Beijing's long-term approach to air pollution and Singapore's transformation of concrete drains, to Medellín's green corridors and sponge cities that work with rainwater, cities around the world are already showing us what's possible. And closer to home, Indore and Colombo are proving that South Asia is innovating too. Curious about how these solutions could be adapted to our cities? Read the full article through this link.

This World Oceans Day, Greenpeace South Asia was proud to stand alongside the coastal communities of Mannar, Sri Lanka, to share powerful stories from the sea. Over ten intensive days, 17 young people from fishing communities in Mannar came together with theatre practitioners from across South Asia to co-create an original performance rooted in their lived experiences, their connection to the ocean, and their hopes for the future. Through a unique collaboration with movement artist and facilitator Junafar Juno, Beru Art and Cultural Foundation / Adavi Arts Collective, and Sri Lanka's renowned STAGES Theatre Group, community members transformed stories of resilience, identity, and environmental stewardship into a moving theatrical production. Many of the participants had never performed on stage before. Yet together they developed and delivered three powerful performances, one in Mannar and two in Colombo—reaching more than 250 audience members. The performances were accompanied by the launch of Greenpeace South Asia's Ocean Justice Report, creating space for dialogue between communities, journalists, civil society representatives, and decision-makers about the future of our oceans and the people who depend on them. Why Mannar? The Gulf of Mannar is one of South Asia's most significant marine ecosystems. Its coral reefs, seagrass meadows, mangrove forests, and rich biodiversity support countless species, including endangered dugongs, while sustaining the livelihoods, cultures, and traditions of thousands of coastal families. Yet these ecosystems and communities face increasing pressures from climate change, pollution, overfishing, and industrial development. At Greenpeace South Asia, we believe that protecting the ocean means protecting the people, cultures, and ecosystems that are inseparable from it. Community stories are a powerful tool for building understanding, solidarity, and action. The response to the performances was deeply emotional. As one audience member reflected: "The emotion was very powerful, with all those strong men crumbling down in tears." This is only the beginning. We look forward to continuing our work alongside the communities of Mannar and exploring opportunities to bring this performance to new audiences and locations in the future. Our sincere thanks to the community members, artists, facilitators, partners, and supporters who made this extraordinary journey possible. Together, we can ensure that the voices of coastal communities remain at the heart of conversations about ocean protection and climate justice. #WorldOceansDay #OceanJustice #ClimateJustice #Mannar #SriLanka #CommunityTheatre #Storytelling #EnvironmentalJustice #OceanProtection #GreenpeaceSouthAsia
