Every year on this day, I go back to one memory from a Global Fund side visit in India in 2005: a long conversation in a clinic where people spoke openly about what it means to live with HIV, to keep going, to rely on a system that doesn’t always keep pace with their lives. That conversation stayed with me because it captured something essential: the HIV response is a collective effort and it works only because so many people, in so many places, refuse to let it fade. And yet, the truth is uncomfortable. Attention shifts, budgets cuts, closing of dedicated organizations, health workers loosing their jobs, clinics closing, people stigmatized afraid for their lives. But what I’ve seen over the years is this: despite all the challenges, people everywhere keep showing up. Clinicians, community leaders, activists, politiciens, volunteers. friends. families. People who speak loudly and people who work quietly in the background. They all carry part of the weight, they ALL care and they all deserve to be seen! On this World AIDS Day, I feel gratitude more than anything. Gratitude for their determination, their courage, the daily commitment that never makes the news. HIV is not over... But neither is the determination of everyone who continues this work. And that is something worth honouring today. Today at the German Bundestag, I had the privilege of attending "Strengthening Political Leadership to End AIDS" It was inspiring to be with legislators from across the globe committed to ending the HIV epidemic. In a world facing a collapse in global health funding, it was powerful to hear the words of Winnie Byanyima, Executive Director of UNAIDS. She shared devastating stories resulting from the lack of resources for humanitarian responses, emphasizing: 'Solidarity may change shape, but it must be sustained.' The new generations will hold those in power accountable based on how they act to defend the quality of life for those who can no longer wait. Ending AIDS is an act of Justice. Thank you to UNAIDS, UNITE Parliamentarians Network for Global Health , The Global Fund, Global Equality Caucus, and STOPAIDS: Uniting UK Voices on the Global Response for organizing this valuable dialogue.

#HIV/#AIDS claims a life every single minute. The epidemic continues to be one of the most pressing global health challenges. We are entering challenging times in the fight against HIV/AIDS. The withdrawal of USAID-support and the tightening of public budgets in many donor countries, have created funding gaps. We discussed the options for action in this politically tense environment on Sunday morning at the high-level side event Strengthening Political Leadership to End HIV of #WHS2025. I was honored to be the patron of this important event, which was hosted by the Global Parliamentary Platform on HIV and AIDS (GPP HIV). I would like to express my special thanks to Parliamentary State Secretary Dr. Georg Kippels, Ms. Winnie Byanyima, Executive Director of UNAIDS, and Prof. Quarraisha Abdool Karim, 2025 Virchow Prize Laureate, for their inspiring keynote speeches. We all agreed that increased cooperation and close networking between parliamentarians worldwide is necessary to achieve the goal of ending AIDS by 2030. Our responsibility does not end where our borders do. Germany may not be able to fill every financial gap — but we can and must do our part. Following our event, it was announced that Germany will provide €1 billion to the Global Fund for the 2026–2028 financing round. Germany is thereby demonstrating responsibility and solidarity in difficult times. We have to decide how to allocate our limited resources in a targeted manner: focusing on local impact, building new partnerships, and pushing for reform within multilateral structures like the UN and WHO . These are key points for a stronger and more efficient global health architecture. Germany also should not remain a silent funder on the sidelines, but become more of a shaper of global health policy. I would like to thank all participants who came to the Bundestag early on Sunday morning and enriched the event with their contributions. On October 12th 2025, the Global Parliamentary Platform on HIV and AIDS (GPP HIV and AIDS) High-Level Breakfast organized by UNITE together with UNAIDS, the Global Equality Caucus and STOPAIDS brought together parliamentarians, health leaders, and advocates at the German Bundestag for a powerful discussion on strengthening political leadership to end HIV. Key takeaways included: ✔ Renewed parliamentary commitment to sustainable HIV financing ✔ Stronger North–South cooperation ✔ Inclusive legal frameworks to protect vulnerable communities UNITE Executive Director Dr. Guilherme Gonçalves Duarte, M.D. emphasized: “For the past 30 years HIV response has been a great global health community lesson. Today, Parliamentarians have both the responsibility and the power to push further and revamp that response. Today’s dialogue strengthens this commitment.” UNITE remains committed to supporting parliamentarians worldwide to champion inclusive health policies, secure sustainable financing, and ensure no one is left behind in the fight against HIV. Parliamentarians from around the world met with policymakers and partners at the World Health Summit in Berlin to foster dialogue on how to mobilize political will, defend equal rights and build inclusive and sustainable responses to HIV. “Parliamentarians have long been a cornerstone of international efforts to end AIDS, pushing for efforts to secure substantial funding, technical expertise, and political advocacy to ensure equitable access to life-saving HIV treatment and prevention services,” said UNAIDS Executive Director, Winnie Byanyima. The event was organized by UNAIDS, UNITE Parliamentarians Network for Global Health, the Global Equality Caucus, and STOPAIDS, under the umbrella of the Global Parliamentary Platform on HIV and AIDS. Hosted by German MP Sasha van Beek, participants focused on reinforcing global collaboration to end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030 and advance human rights for populations most affected by HIV. Participants underscored the urgent need for renewed global commitment to HIV financing and to strengthening cooperation between North and South. Read press release: https://lnkd.in/dCjbCNVv

This Sunday morning, I joined the High-Level Parliamentary Breakfast at the Deutscher Bundestag, held alongside the World Health Summit and organised by GPP HIV and AIDS, UNAIDS, UNITE Parliamentarians Network for Global Health, the Global Equality Caucus and STOPAIDS: Uniting UK Voices on the Global Response. Many thanks to Frontline AIDS for the invitation! The messages were familiar — and still heavy. AIDS still claims a life every minute. In 2024, 630,000 people died, and over 210,000 young women acquired HIV. We’ve had the science and data for years. What’s been and is still missing? The usual suspects of the global HIV response: political will, sustained funding, and the courage to defend communities instead of just talking about them. I was moved to see politicians who once came from civil society now sitting in parliaments, still fighting the same battles from another side of the table. The uncomfortable truth is that we’re losing ground. Harm reduction programmes are hanging by a thread, civic space keeps shrinking, and the people most affected are still the last to be heard. Ending AIDS by 2030 was supposed to be a promise. Some mornings it feels like we’ve been repeating the same truths for decades — but silence has never saved a life. This is why it was especially important to see so many allies in this room and then hear about Germany pledging 1 billion euros to the Global Fund. It gives a bit of hope — and also a sense of how long this road has been... #EndAIDS #WorldHealthSummit #UNAIDS #HarmReduction #HealthEquity #CommunityLeadership
