SSB Dataportal

Here we collect information about our datasets, variables, classifications and APIs in one place.

Why SSB Dataportal

About SSB Dataportal

The goal is to make it easier to find, understand and use SSB's data correctly and efficiently.

In this first version you can explore Statistics Norway's variable definitions. The portal will gradually expand with overviews of datasets, classifications and APIs, so you can see the full chain from concept to finished data file. By connecting definitions from Vardef with codes from Klass and dataset documentation, we establish a "single source of truth" that ensures we always interpret and use our data the same way.

110-distrcts

Agricultural area by use

The standard classifies agricultural area by actual use. Firstly, agricultural area is divided into utilised and unutilised agricultural area. Utilised agricultural area is area that is harvested at least once within a year, included area of permanent crops from the year they are planted and fallow land. Usually, agricultural statistics comprise only utilised agricultural area.

Agricultural holdings by economic size (SGM)

The classification is based on standard gross margin (SGM) as common measurement of the various outputs (crop and livestock products) from an agricultural holding. The SGM for a crop or livestock product (enterprise) is the balance between the standard value of output and the standard value of certain direct costs easily allocated to this output. SGM is calculated as an average figure at regional level. The economic size of a holding is determined by its total SGM.

Agricultural holdings by economic size (SO)

The classification is based on standard output as common unit of measure of the different enterprises within a holding. The standard output (SO) for crop and livestock products is the regional average monetary value of the agricultural output at farm-gate prices over a reference period of five years. The SO is excluded direct payments, value added tax and taxes on products. The classification by SO is not comparable with the classification by standard gross margin (SGM).

Agricultural holdings by size of utilised agricultural area

The classification distributes agricultural holdings by size of utilised agricultural area. The utilised area comprises both owned and rented agricultural area. Earlier, utilised agricultural area was so to speak the only unit for measuring size of holdings. Due to increased specialisation in agriculture, utilised agricultural area has become less appropriate as measurement unit. E.g., a holding may run specialised livestock farming without operating agricultural area. The classification of agricultural holdings by economic size (SO) distributes agricultural holdings by estimated turnover for all crop and livestock products produced by the holding within one year.

Agricultural holdings by type of farming (SGM)

The classification is based on standard gross margin (SGM) as common measurement of the various outputs (crop and livestock products) from an agricultural holding. The SGM for a crop or livestock product (enterprise) is the balance between the standard value of output and the standard value of certain direct costs easily allocated to this output. SGM is calculated as an average figure at regional level. The type of farming of a holding is determined by the relative contribution of the different enterprises to its total SGM.
