Richard Yaker

I build things that run without you watching.

Building production systems since 1990—from UNIX and the early Internet to JavaScript, global cloud platforms, and AI agents. I founded RockWeb before the commercial web took off, joined Netscape as employee #937, and have spent three decades building technology that survives production. Today I'm co-founding Tengo and BlockCopy while keeping the job search open. Until that funding closes, I'm available to companies that want an executive who still ships. Remote, or Los Angeles and Ventura County.

Tengo

Wealth-management platform, New York

Software that does in minutes what a room of specialists does by hand in spreadsheets: fitting the instrument that has protected fortunes for generations to each client it is built for. Building the platform and the agentic automation behind it, alongside a CEO from Apple Retail and a COO from FIS.

BlockCopy

Rebuilding a pioneering social-trading platform for the AI era.

BlockCopy is the modern successor to DittoTrade, the pioneering copy-trading platform originally built and operated from 2009–2015. I'm partnering with original founders Joe and Avi Fox to bring that technology, IP, and years of real-world trading experience forward as a modern, AI-native platform.

Followers don't copy a lead trader's trade after the fact. They join the same block and fill at the same price in the same moment, with zero slippage, and can detach mid-fill while the block resizes around them. Equities and options first, with additional asset classes on the roadmap.

As Co-Founder & CTO, I rebuilt the platform from its original Java codebase using AI agents, including the web platform, backend, mobile app, and automated testing infrastructure. I load-test it nightly against blocks of up to 1,000 followers.

iChange & Weight Loss Challenge

Manager, Software Development

A two-sided wellness coaching platform where distributors coached members: nutrition tracking, tasks, progress, groups, and social accountability. Grew the team from 4 to 25 across three time zones and rewrote the stack from PHP to Ruby with native iOS and Android apps. Distributors on iChange saw better retention, recruiting, and sales than those off it. The companion Weight Loss Challenge tracked 1M+ pounds across 12,000+ challenges and ran nine years with no dedicated team.

WithoutABox

Acquired by Amazon / IMDb in 2008

The first online film-festival submission platform, built from scratch. 54 top festivals including Sundance, 10,000 filmmakers onboarded in ten months, delivered at roughly half of an $800K budget. The platform I shipped in 2002 was still running when Amazon bought the company.

How I lead

“Most of what gets called AI engineering right now is people wiring up demos. I build the harness. The deterministic part. The part that has to keep working when nobody's watching.”

On what separates production AI from prototype AI

Build for the successor, not the sprint

WithoutABox ran six years after I left. The Weight Loss Challenge ran nine with no team. I optimize for longevity, not demos.

Developer joy drives adoption

Learned at Netscape in 1995. The tools change. Making engineers feel capable and creative is what drives adoption, and that never changes.

Psychological safety is a technical investment

Teams that can say “I don't know” ship faster than teams that can't. Ninety percent retention over six years wasn't an accident.

Be the calm in the room

Twenty years of daily Vedic meditation. When a Sev1 hits at 2am, the executive who stays grounded makes better decisions than the one in fight-or-flight.

Career arc

Three decades of building what's next.
