Removed Comment IO: “Show me your Facebook profile” Me: “I don’t have Facebook” IO: “Uhm no problem. Let me see your Instagram. Me: Don’t have that eith..” IO: “Twitter?!” Me: “No, but I’m on the Fediverse” IO: “The what now?” Me: “ Okay, so—picture social media, right? Now take that picture and gently crumple it into a ball, toss it into a basket labeled “no single corporation owns this,” and then immediately realize the basket is actually a network of baskets that can all politely lend each other baskets, provided they all agree on what a basket is. That is the Fediverse. The Fediverse is “federated” social media, which is a fancy word for “it’s not one website, it’s a bunch of websites that have agreed to talk to each other,” like a neighborhood where every house is its own little party, and the parties can mingle because everyone uses the same doorbell standard. Except the doorbell standard is called ActivityPub (yes, that sounds like a government office where you renew your passport, and yes, it behaves like a protocol), and instead of ringing a bell you’re sending tiny structured messages that say things like “hello I have posted a meme” and “please deliver this meme to the people who asked for my memes.” Now, you’d think that would make it simpler. It does not. It makes it \*more\* explainable in the way that a mechanical watch is explainable. Like, yes, it’s logical, but it contains tiny gears and springs and you can feel yourself losing the attention of the person you’re explaining it to around the time you say “decentralized.” Here’s the basic concept: On normal social media, you make an account on One Big Platform™. You’re “you” on that platform, in that platform’s kingdom, under that platform’s rules, algorithms, ad-tech, and mysterious vibe shifts. If the platform decides tomorrow that your posts will only be shown to your mom and a bot selling sunglasses, that’s just your life now. In the Fediverse, you don’t join “the platform.” You join an \*instance\* (also called a server), which is basically a community-run site that hosts accounts. Think of it like email: you don’t “join email,” you pick Gmail or Outlook or some weird domain your friend owns because they’re into self-hosting and pain. Same idea—except instead of sending emails you’re sending “posts,” and instead of the goal being productive communication, the goal is… social media. So your name is usually like:     @yourname\@some.server And that’s already where the explanation starts to sound like you’re describing a secret society, because people are like, “Why is your name twice?” and you’re like, “It’s not twice, it’s… an address.” And they’re like, “So your social media is… email?” and you’re like, “No, but also kind of yes, but not in the way that makes it less weird.” Each instance has its own rules and moderation style. Some are calm, some are chaos, some are niche, and some are like “this server is for people who only post photos of mushrooms and politely say ‘nice mushroom’ to each other.” Many instances are run by volunteers, which gives the whole thing the energy of “community garden,” except sometimes the garden is arguing about composting, and sometimes the argument is about whether to block an entire neighboring garden because one guy in that garden keeps yelling. Now: federation. Federation means the instances can “federate” with each other—share posts and follows across servers—so you can follow someone on a different instance and it still works. If you’re @you\@serverA, you can follow @them\@serverB, and then you see their posts in your feed, and they see your replies, and everyone pretends it’s normal that they’re interacting across independent websites like it’s one big site. But—and this is key—this is where it becomes delightfully ridiculous: Federation is not a magical universal law. Federation is a \*choice\*. Instances can choose who they interact with. They can block other instances. They can limit them. They can say, “We don’t talk to that server because it has bad moderation,” or because it’s spammy, or because it’s philosophically incompatible, or because one time in 2022 someone posted a cursed GIF and nobody recovered emotionally. So instead of one giant platform with one giant set of rules, you get many smaller communities with their own rules, and a sort of diplomatic system between them. It’s like the United Nations, except the delegates are servers, the treaties are blocklists, and the primary export is posts. Okay, so what does it \*look\* like? It looks like social media. Like, genuinely. You have a timeline. You post. People reply. You can boost/reshare. You can like. You can follow. You can make lists. You can post media. You can have DMs. It resembles the familiar thing enough that you relax— —until someone asks, “What platform is this?” And you say, “Well it depends.” Because the Fediverse is not one app. It’s many apps and services that speak the same language. \- Mastodon: microblogging (Twitter-ish) \- Pixelfed: photo sharing (Instagram-ish) \- PeerTube: video hosting (YouTube-ish) \- Lemmy / Kbin / Mbin: link aggregation and forums (Reddit-ish) \- Misskey / Firefish: microblogging but with extra features and vibes \- And a bunch more that either (a) do extremely specific things, or (b) do normal things but with a different user interface and an even more confusing name. So now you’re not just explaining “I’m on social media,” you’re explaining “I’m on a constellation of interconnected social systems that may or may not appear to each other depending on a distributed web of trust decisions.” Which is the point where most normal people start looking for the nearest exit. Then there’s the concept of \*instances having cultures\*. Like, not just rules, but vibes. Some instances are techy. Some are artsy. Some are local to a region or language. Some are strict about content warnings. Some are more freeform. So choosing an instance is a bit like choosing a neighborhood, except the neighborhood is on the internet and if you don’t like it you can (sometimes) move your account to another server and take your followers with you, which is called “migration,” which sounds like you’re a digital bird. Yes, you can migrate accounts. No, it is not always painless. Yes, it feels like moving apartments. No, not all your stuff comes with you perfectly, depending on the platform and the features. Yes, this makes it feel like the Fediverse is both more user-friendly and also like it was designed by people who enjoy reading documentation recreationally. Now, here’s the part that makes it hard to explain in a fun way: In the mainstream world, the platform is a product. In the Fediverse, the platform is more like… an ecosystem. Or a public utility. Or a co-op. Or a bunch of hobbyists maintaining a train system where each station is independently run, the tracks are open standards, and the timetable is “best effort.” So when someone says, “What’s the Fediverse like?” the honest answer is: “It’s like social media, except it’s more human, more customizable, and less algorithmically manipulative… but also you occasionally need to understand what an instance is, what federation is, and why your cousin’s posts aren’t showing up because your server blocked their server due to an ongoing diplomatic incident involving moderation philosophy.” And you say it with a straight face, which makes it funnier. And then there’s the final twist: the Fediverse is simultaneously simpler and more complicated than normal social media. Simpler, because: \- No single company owns the whole thing. \- Communities can set their own rules. \- It’s often chronological and less “engagement hacked.” More complicated, because: \- “Where do I sign up?” has an answer longer than “the App Store.” \- Your username looks like an email address. \- You can’t just assume everyone is in the same place. \- Sometimes the social graph feels like it’s held together by goodwill, open standards, and a mutual agreement not to scream. So when an immigration officer says, “Please give me your socials,” and you say, “I use the Fediverse,” what you’re really saying is: “I do not belong to one empire. I belong to a federation of small city-states that exchange memes via protocol. My identity is an address. My timeline is partially dependent on inter-server foreign policy. And if you want to verify my posts, you must first ask: which server? which app? and are we currently federating?” Which is, in a way, a very strong argument that you might be either (a) extremely privacy-conscious, or (b) a wizard. Or both“ IO: “Sir, are you _carrying_ any illegal substances?” The long rambling about the Fediverse was generated by AI, cause life is too short 😅 by Meldrik@lemmy.wtf
reason: AI generated rambling. If life is too short to write it yourself, it's too short to inflict it on others. Please spoiler tag next time at a minimum.

I don't even know how to parse this bullshit you just vomited. > unless you happen to be a full mechanic and restorer No shit, Sherlock. That's why I said "learn the way of the wrench". It was a tongue-in-cheek euphemism for "DO YOUR OWN WORK". Removed Comment Most [🇺🇲 civilians](https://www.thenationalliteracyinstitute.com/2024-2025-literacy-statistics) are illiterate fucks. I cannot blame the ignorant. I blame the literates that choose to oppress the ignorant time and time again. 🇺🇲 Democrats & Republicans did everything in their consciousness to drive the 🇺🇲 to fascism. They duped the ignorant, those who refused to read history, those that can't read, and those who they deceived. I cannot shed tears for the culprits. So fuck both literate Parties.
