Ethan Lowenthal

I'm a software engineer with a background in mathematics and computer science, building the infrastructure photonics needs to scale. At Ayar Labs, I work on layout and verification for TeraPHY optical I/O chiplets. Previously, at PsiQuantum, I designed and scaled the optical alignment process for packaging photonic quantum chips.

Selected Work

  • Photonic Infrastructure @ Ayar Labs: Built the layout engine that generates TeraPHY chips, along with the DRC/LVS and PDK tooling that verifies every cell before tapeout.
  • Photonic Packaging @ PsiQuantum: Wrote the search algorithm for automated fiber-array and heterogeneous die-to-die alignment. Took it from lab bring-up to high-volume production, achieving the world's best edge-coupling loss.
  • OceanEye @ University of Victoria: Worked with researchers at Ocean Networks Canada and the Hakai Institute to build a computer vision system that counts sea urchins in their underwater survey footage, for monitoring BC kelp forests. Published at an IEEE conference.
  • Open Source: Author of GDS Lens, a VS Code extension that renders GDSII and OASIS chip layouts in a WebGL2 canvas. Contributor to ShaderToy-Chrome-Plugin (shader development tooling) and LabExT (automated control of photonic lab experiments).
