Italy: Guidelines on the use of artificial intelligence at schools
The Ministry of Education and Merit (Ministero dell’istruzione e del merito – MIM) has provided schools with the Guidelines for the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) in the educational institutions.
According to the directives set by the "Italian strategy for artificial intelligence 2024-2026" (Strategia italiana per l’intelligenza artificiale 2024-2026), and additional regulatory and strategic principles, the MIM intends to oversee the implementation of AI technologies in educational settings. This measure has the following goals:
-
To enhance the competitiveness of the Italian education system,
-
To safeguard the quality of the system,
-
To promote fairness,
-
To inspire students and institutions to utilize AI's potential with informed awareness.
As part of the national strategy, educational institutions have been provided with the Guidelines for the introduction of artificial intelligence in the educational institutions (Linee guida per l’introduzione dell’introduzione dell’Intelligenza Artificiale nelle istituzioni scolastiche). The general objectives of these guidelines are as follows:
-
To provide schools with indications to ensure compliance with regulations on artificial intelligence and personal data protection,
-
To promote technological innovation and the dissemination of anthropocentric, secure, reliable, ethical and responsible AI in the world of education,
-
To encourage the development and uniform use of AI systems in schools,
-
To promote awareness of the opportunities and risks offered by AI.
Educational institutions may autonomously launch initiatives in the field of AI to pursue specific objectives, such as, for example, improving learning and enhancing students' individual potential, promoting inclusion, simplifying and optimising the internal processes of the school, enhancing the quality and efficiency of services for students and families, and ensuring continuous and specific training for the adoption of new technologies.
