ITU Secretary-General


Doreen Bogdan-MartinDoreen Bogdan-Martin took office as Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) on 1 January 2023.

With over three decades of leadership experience in global telecommunications policy, Ms. Bogdan-Martin has emphasized the need for digital transformation to achieve economic prosperity, job creation, skills development, gender equality, and socio-economic inclusion, as well as to build circular economies, reduce climate impact, and save lives. Her historic election by ITU Member States in S​eptember 2022 made her the first woman ever to head the ​1​60-year-old organization. Known for mobilizing innovative partnerships, she aims to promote meaningful connectivity, intensify cooperation to connect the unconnected, and strengthen the alignment of digital technologies with inclusive sustainable development.​​

G20 Leaders' Summit

​​The G20 Leader's Summit in South Africa highlighted solidarity, equality and sustainability as pillars of inclusive growth. "In every G20 nation and beyond, the biggest economic gains occur when people can meaningfully access digital tools to learn, do business, and participate safely and confidently in the global economy," said ITU Secretary-General, Doreen Bogdan-Martin.​​

Global Youth Celebration 2025

​"Think of ITU as your collaborative partner," ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin urged young leaders on the eve of the World Telecommunication Development Conference. "Because if we are to connect everyone on Earth meaningfully – when billions are still offline – we need your energy, ideas, and leadership."​

World Telecommunication Development Conference

​The ITU Secretary-General said to delegates at the 9th World Telecommunication Development Conference (WTDC-25) in Baku, Azerbaijan: "Since the last WTDC, hundreds of millions more people have been brought online — in no small part thanks to your efforts." The City of Winds, she noted, was strengthened by partnerships within and across industries, countries and regions.​

Transform Africa Summit 2025

​​​Africa's AI future is synonymous with progress, possibility and hope, according to ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin. "African countries ... have no intention of sitting on the sidelines of the AI revolution," she said at the Transform Africa Summit. They intend to lead it—and that's incredibly exciting to see." ​

100th meeting of the ITU Radio Regulations Board

​​​At the 100th meeting of the Radio Regulations Board (RRB), the ITU Secretary-General reminded participants of a long-standing question: " How do we share spectrum and orbit resources in ways that work for everyone? Because while the RRB's job may look technical, its impact is deeply human."​
